Cut off his what???

Post by Skinny rooster » Wed Nov 09, 2016 1:03 pm

Oh you guys have such dirty minds, I knew you would have to look! So I was looking at chicken porn and I was reading about old English games. I had Wheaton and black bantams (really liked them) a couple of years ago. I stumbled onto something I didn't know. I read that to show them you have to cut off the comb, wattles and ears!!! Ugh, is this true? Is that why so many look like they had frozen combs. Is it because they used to be a fighting breed at one time. I think that is terrible and it ruins the look of them.

Yep, you cut off the wattles and comb with shears; its called dubbing. And yes a carrover from the cockfighting days.

Lol. Ya I will admit your title had me rushing to read what this was about! I have two BBR old English banty roosters. Neither are dubbed and theres no way I could bring myself to do that. I love my guys' combs, however I must admit I think they look quite dashing dubbed. Mine are in an unheated coop and I have had to bring them inside twice in 3 winters during a really cold snap. Even if I put a heat lamp in my one little fella is too much of a gentleman to sit under it and drinking water soaks his wattles and they freeze. He lost a bit off one wattle last year because I didn't notice it turning purple fast enough :(

Nice birds Happy!
I have seen it done and although it gives me the cringes it really doesn't appear to affect the bird in any bad way. I think it's only the boys by one year old.
Interestingly a friend of mine in the UK didn't have his working spaniels tail docked. She got into brambles and the vet had to operate because of the tearing to her. I have heard that in UK you can no longer dock unless you belong to a working dog club.

Thanks @Killerbunny- they are fiesty little things.
I read just recently that some countries are starting to ban dubbing as well. I believe Australia was one of them. @Skinny rooster I think it did start back in the days of cock fighting probably and just became the acceptable practice/standard. Kinda like plastic surgery for birds to me. Wasn't until that first bout of frostbite I thought maybe there was a reason for it still beyond just looks but I doubt that's why it continues.

To me it should be optional. That is like having a peacock show and saying only peacocks with their tails cut off can enter the show. Why didn't they try to breed OEGs with a rose or cushion comb then. Lol, I actually thought there were two types of OEGs, single comb and the other. I didn't realize it was all the same breed at the sales just there are cut and uncut. That's kind of a dirty joke some people might get.

Oh and they were saying the only difference between Wheaton and BBR is the females? That the roosters are the same colour, is that true? They also said Wheatons rule and BBRs drool! Lol, just stirring up poop.

Lol can't stir poop with me cause I don't care! I've never seen a chicken I didn't want to take home and I certainly don't show them.
I've been told that unless you buy from an established breeder it's quite possible to THINK you have a BBR pair (or whatever colour) but all sorts of genes can start popping up in chicks. I guess that's true for about any chicken. The mom in the pic of the month is the daughter of the pair pictured above. She's much smaller than mom and has a lot more gold in her. Those chicks are from a mating with her and her father. Two hatched out almost white which is not what they should be) the white boy grew in white/black spangled feathers...not a drop of red on him. The white girl looked more like what I would call wheaten. I was pretty surprised to see 2 white chicks under her tho. Thought she had been sneaking over to the neighbors!
