I'm happy that I make my own, but up until I started doing that we did use Toms and still have it kicking around the closets. When I get too lazy or too busy and run out of homemade paste, I do use my back up supply of Tom's I still think any commercial toothpaste should have warnings, because none are truly all natural.

Unrefined organic coconut oil, baking soda and essential oils of tree oil and spearmint. That's mine, that's it that's all.

I'm not surprised. Once a business that starts small with good intentions either gets to be bigger and as a tax and liability preference, turns corporate or is bought up by a larger corporate entity, the end result is always the same...make sure that the investors don't park their money elsewhere. The way to ensure that is to maximize return to the shareholder. The beancounters get control of the situation and they have serious tunnel vision. All they see are numbers, not the grand picture and certainly not the social effects, which sadly, are usually negative. They are willing to use legality, misinterpretation of the rules, looking upward and whistling tunes when faced with health concerns in the products, buying off legislators and on and on, all to make sure the money keeps flowing. as always, follow the money.... I am not ever surprised anymore...it's not good to be this cynical on a beautiful Sunday morning...chicken TV is in order

Heck, I thnk even municipal water should come with a warning label. At least most consumer products have the ingredient list (mostly) displayed. Society doesn't 'see' the hundreds upon hundreds of compounds running from our tap prior to drinking/cooking/utilizing it. Fluorine, chlorine, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, DDT, heavy metals, oh and the mightily list goes on. Drink up.

Baking soda is not all natural, not at all. And quite dangerous ingested in quantity. But so is anything. Really, unless you're brushing your teeth with beach sand ( my mother uses an "all natural" (HA) silica toothpaste) there truly isn't one available on the market, and they should not be allowed to say that they are.
As for me, I've used Colgate Total (that's the one with the infamous Triclosan) since it hit the shelves, and with the exception of having my wisdom teeth out decades ago, I've had no dental work necessary. I have no fillings, no cavities, no receding gums or bone loss. I go once every five years or so for a polish, and so the hygienist or dental assistant can shout "no fillings??!!" because it amuses the heck out of me. Now, my mother has good teeth as well, so I'm fairly certain my choice of toothpaste can't take all the credit, if even any of it. But if it ain't broke...lol

Sodium bicarbonate / baking soda is a salt. There are far worse ingredients in toothpaste and I can honestly say I am not the least not worried abou over consumption lol.

Mineral springs, spring water bottled has NaHCO3 in dissolved and depending on the spring, in high numbers. Given the choice of spring water over municipal water, spring water for sure. Plastic bottles aren't my thing tho.

My parents live in Delta. On their road is a house that has a 'spring' if you will. It is flowing constantly. And flows into a tub for the cows. They have 3. It is the best tasting water I've ever tasted. It comes down the rocks behind them. Crystal clear. But I would think the dissolved particles are in large quantities as well but that water is sooo good. What I would do to have that here!

the danger in sodium barcarbonate is when you ingest it it combines with water and gives off gas that can really severely impact your GI tract. Ever eating dough that your grandma was making for scones or biscuits and then got gut rot? LOL.
honestly, i think someone could brush their teeth with anything slightly abrasive, and it would work.
have fun someday-put some toothpaste on a slide and look at it under the microscope (a glass slide, not a playground slide). then drop some water on it, and see how "little" the chunky bits are then! toothpaste is just a bunch of small ground up hard pieces....to scour the stuff off your teeth. flavour makes it taste good. sodium bicarbonate gives it the bubbles.....
