interesting article in Wednesday Ottawa Citizen Farmers in Curran ON , the chickens are on pasture and fed grain in movable green house with access to outside, from the picture it looks like the Cornish cross and they are 8-10 LB at 9 weeks, which is very respectable.
Interesting article if anybody can find a link to it ? would take too long on dial up.

Similar to what neighbour is doing down the road only smaller pens/ tractors . A few half truths In the article but looks like a niche to fill if only doing small scale & seasonal . If i was younger /healthier id give it a whirl .

So at 7 lbs a bird dressed that would be $ 115,500 gross, maximum. Not bad even if you only took home half of that. I wonder how many people would be willing to pay almost forty bucks for a chicken though. Maybe lots of clientele in Ottawa, I hear there are plenty of rich senators.

Plenty of young couples with six figure salaries and young families in the Valley will pay $ 40 -44 for a large chicken, not really unreasonable when you consider the work.
$5 or 6 per LB for a premium product even here on fixed income I would consider it and definitely preferred to "organic"

Its what the market will bear for a niche market . Im sure that couple couldnt care less & rightly so if their birds were the only ones & their customers that got / paid that much for them . Smart business move , find / make a market doing what you like & fill it and very nice to see that regulating bodies will allow it . Luck to them .

I think quite a few couples with young families have had a major rethink about what they feed their kids. When we were both struggling with part time jobs etc, we actually found it cheaper to buy better food and meat from reliable sources than to throw away the c**p from the SS. I always find it interesting around here though that families won't pay for good food because they can't then afford pop and chips for the kids! Really?

Clearly we are living in the wrong part of the province!!!!!!! Looking for Ottawa real estate.............

I love articles like this. I don't really "work" I homestead. It is kinda nice to see a dollar value to the food I grow and raise. Wow $40 for a nice big chicken. Hubby may bring home the cash, but I literally bring home the bacon :)
