Before the rise of the Royal Navy The east coast of England and Wales also provided Slaves for North Africa. Another fact conveniently forgotten and never apologised for. The Black participation in the slave trade is also overlooked.
Although we find it abhorrent today; slavery was a normal practice since the dawn of civilization, even in the Americas until the mi,d 1800's. It still goes on today, although usually connected with the Sex Trade. Our time would be better spent pressuring the powers that be to use their resources to stamp out this atrocity world wide.

I think the author is trying to present an opposing argument, but he doesn't do a very good job lol

I did know about the Irish slave trade and that they were valued less than the black slaves.

Some of my descendants were Irish, but they were stoned off their land for being "Black Irish" so they immigrated to Canada. My Mother has the dark hair, complexion and eyes they describe in the article as does many of my family members on her side of the family.

A whole village in Ireland, Baltimore, was depopulated by Barbary pirates. also long after the Brits banned slavery white women were sold as prostitutes via Hungary. Interestingly crew of slave vessels were actually valued lower than the African slaves. This came to light during the investigation of a sunken vessel in the Caribbean. On a recent genealogy road show an African American family traced their roots back to the Trail of Tears. Cherokee were encouraged to keep black slaves as part of their absorption into "civilised" society. These slaves were then considered Cherokee and a real part of the Cherokee nation. Indian nations and African tribes already kept slaves as part of their culture so not so shocking as we may think today.

I did not know any of this either but it sure dosent suprise me one bit. there is a lot of dark and hidden history. theres a lot missing or frabricated in history books as well. I can remember arguing with a history teacher in highschool about some BS... I failed that class cuz im not a sheep. but I understand the teachers point of view... "you can only teach the lessons taught, its okay its not your fault." he really didnt like that when I said that to him. I wrote a poem about that day and those are the first 2 lines, I cant remember the rest off the top of my head, id have to go find it. but thats how history gets lost, the people in power get to write the books!

I really struggle with history. It's morbid. History taught is wars, slavery and politics. All a bloodshed if you ask me. Mankind's rise to the 'top' is because of our uncanning ability and willingness to murder, rape, prison and enslave those who stand in our way.

Slavery, murder and wars are still a very prominent part of our current day.

History and the barbaric behaviours really haven't changed, it's just aged and been modernized.
I guess you really can't teach an old dog new tricks.
