Good Morning!

Post by Rhonda » Thu Feb 18, 2016 11:22 am

A belated Happy Birthday to Martin. Thanks for all you do for us. We appreciate it.

Bright sunny day here but cold! Had a good morning with the newbies. 6 eggs from 7 chickens. I am impressed thought the move might slow them down a bit. The sunflower seeds I left them yesterday were gone this morning so they figured that out. One of them was even up on the high perch this morning! Best of all when I went in with their morning treats from my kitchen they didn't flatten themselves against the back wall. Some were actually right at my feet with their heads in the bowl as I filled it. Progress!

so good to hear Rhonda! always nice when they finally figure out that you aren't going to try to take their heads off....
BOSS=crack for chickens i think. LOL

it was awful cold this morning -21 at my place. RIR's water dish is good to -12. and it was -14 in the barn....and rooster was standing ON the frozen water looking at his feet....so i filled it up with warm water....it'll be warm enough with the sun on the barn today, probably a nice toasty 5C or so inside. but last night was just COLD. winter has only been here for what, 2 weeks? i'm done. i'm glad tomorrow is warming up again. and then nice through the next week.

well, i'm vertical. walking around (sortof)....talking.....without tylenol sinus....can't wait to start taking the painkillers for my back again....so that's a start to feeling better....wow. next time i have to send someone home that has come to work sick i'm going to lysol spray them first or do it by texting them from the other side of the lab or something....because this is ridiculous. at least it was only about 4 days. but bad enough last night after evening chores i was ready to sell every single living thing (except the hubby) from the farm...get rid of it all....it's not fun doing an hour chores (the bare minimum) twice a day when all i want to do is lie in bed, or take myself out behind the barn and put an end to it all. yuck. hopefully i'll be immune to this one now for life. still not perfect yet, but at least i'm not dreading doing chores later on.

well, this weekend will be a processing weekend. all the old slackers are going. and all the boys are finally big enough to either be breeders or go in the freezer. and all the old girls who aren't quite freeloading yet will go to the outside coop to lay until they stop laying, new breeding pens will be set up. was so annoyed yesterday, had a waterer let loose in the layer coop-ice under the lid i guess-30 liters of water onto the floor....so had an emergency "must put down dry shavings" incident....sigh. grabbed a bag of shavings from a stack in the barn, and of course the sparrows have been freeloading in the barn, and there's sparrow poop all over the bags, and a nice big frozen roundworm in one of the poops. so that bag got stripped off the shavings and burned....but that means that now everyone that survives the weekend freezer fest will be treated. i tell ya, it's life on the farm, just when you think everything is all done.....it's always something!!! right BVF??! (i swear that's her favorite expression.....and it's true too).

okay, does anyone have any contacts for 4H groups in ontario that do poultry? there is NOTHING in my area......

We ran a 4H poultry club here in Prince Edward County for the last 2 years. Not doing it this year but can answer any questions you may have.

we are looking at reaching out to 4H poultry groups to connect kids interested in the 4H with the animals that might be available from breeders here on PTO....so if you can PM me any info you have (or email it to me) that would be great....
I for one, have animals that would do quite well for kids interested in showing poultry, but have no 4H poultry here....i looked into starting our own 4H poultry down in my area but it's next to impossible for me with other obligations in life, and time constraints-running a farm, working full time, etc etc. not to mention i couldn't find anyone else in the area interested, and there needs to be a minimum of 2 people interested in starting up-3 is better in case of illness etc.
anyhoo. any info is helpful. :-)

So the tale of Jester continues (major eye injury) I believe she is now blind in the right eye. The eye rotates out and in so it basically pops out and in... As she gets excited and/or runs around the eye comes out. Very discomforting. Vet appt tomorrow.

So we found goggles for dogs (Doggles) and visors for dogs, made for bug eyed breeds as well as all dogs (hunting, bomb sniffing and police, dogs that stick their head out the window etc.) to help prevent eye injuries.

May your dogs not have this happen, and get outside and enjoy this sun!

Today really warmed up!! I noticed it when I went down to my bus this afternoon.

Got stuck in the lane yesterday morning, in a snowdrift. I knew I would get stuck... but didn't really think hubby would move it. He got home at midnight. It was tough going thru it, when I got home the night before. Oh well. After a small fit... I radio'd in that I may be late... had to get a push from the tractor. AND that I hoped it would start... because it had only been plugged in 10 minutes, lol. It was -17C! It did start, he did push me... and off I went. Not late at all. I like to leave myself lots of time, for crap like this.

We just brought home a cow in boxes. TONS of nice yummy hamburger. The whole gal. A young cow, whose feet continue'd to grow, like a neglected horse... and no matter how often we trimmed... she was getting more lame. Too nice to send to Kitchener. She was only 6! 300 1- lb packages in the freezer. And, sad... she had a calf in there, but she wasn't going to last until she gave birth. :(

So now I have to sell it, lol.
