Re: Good Morning!
Good evening now, mainly because I am home safe and sound after most of the day on the road, although some parts were way more suitable for snowmobile, the 4wheel drive sure came in handy, none of the parking lots were plowed, dragging a shopping cart full of food thru a fresh snow parking lot may be more then I have bargained for and in the restaurant, we were the only 4 brave souls who made it, brave friends indeed.
There were some white knuckle moments, but it was hard to ignore how beautiful it was with all the roads snow covered a true Northern wonderland.

AL! How's it goin' laddie?
small engines - yep - built for new standards of emissions - so the engines are tighter with smaller oil clearances - then they die
old machines were a bit looser - and heavier made - but repairable
Maybe thats why the Honda woodsplitter is $1000 more expensive then the Briggs or (ghast) no name engine
of course the old beast of a tractor - late 70's IH584 - ran rough since I got it in November (brother had it for the summer) - then it started choking and puking on Sunday
My dad had a fit as I refused to fix it until it warmed up (-35 sheesh) so we were snowed in Monday (two cars were down the driveway and the snowmobile ran fine) and I pulled the fuel filters apart Tuesday aft - it was -14 but doable - hands up and elbows down diesel running down my right arm fiddling with the glass bowl under the steel filter (great design! yeeha) - almost froze my face to the loader frame when my chin touched - don't overtighten and break the glass bowl (done that before) - 3pm - no leaks - purring like a kitten - yeeha

I feel for you out in the cold fixing a cold machine, your wife should be proud of you.

What a winter week it’s been! Buses cancelled 4 days, so the kid has to do doubled up exams next week...assuming there are no more snow days! Chickens aren’t very happy either but have done quite well considering. The sheep as usual just take it in stride...

Re: Good Morning!
woke up this morning to about 8 inches of snow! it's really light and fluffy and actually quite nice, if it weren't so flippin windy!!!! of course need to move hay. ha ha. got the shovel out....walkways are clear. new alternator was installed by DH yesterday and block heater plugged in so hopefully the tractor will work better now! we did move some wood yesterday, it was fairly cold but so pretty in the woods. so many dead ash trees. not today though, man that wind is brutal....so not doing wood today.
a few things to do around the house. turkeys overwhelmingly voted to stay in today, as did the chickens, horses are standing in the lee of the barn, sleeping. great way to pass the wintery-ness! guess it's a good day to go plan what to plant in the garden!

Re: Good Morning!
Good morning,
so feeling freezing cold, the door in to the cold storage had to be opened in to the basement because it was getting bit too close to zero in there.
Sunny a beautiful today, after whiteout winds yesterday, so day to take a deep breath, before the next load of snow comes, apparently a big one.
On a sunny day the temperature in the barn even on a very cold day hovers around freezing point, it's amazing that even with the single pane windows the benefits of "passive solar" are there.
Have a warmish one :)
-11 C in the barn at 9 AM, not too shabby with -22 C outside

Re: Good Morning!
well, 2 foot drifts and a tractor that won't start. again. not the battery. not the alternator. likely the starter now. what next? and headed to -20F for the next 3 days. yay. will be fun moving hay if we don't get that tractor running post haste....and of course we own a tractor that canada doesn't seem to carry parts for. another yay.
so. 4x4 down the driveway to pack a track....but if the mail guy tries to drive up he won't make it....so i hope he won't try. although 2 days last week our mail was delivered to the neighbour, and theirs delivered to us, so who knows!
lots of snow last night, and wind. and freezing rain. hope everyone east of here is okay.....and hopefully we'll have some sun with the colder temps. if the sun comes out the barn is a decent temp even with -20F outside. guess i'll be shovelling while DH works on the tractor tonight. horses are going to need hay in this cold coming up. amazing how much they eat when it gets cold.
and i'm crazy-putting the incubator on either tonight or tomorrow for the turkey eggs i've collected. i must be going totally mental.....at least it's 28 days to hatch, will be close to march...and march is spring right? LOL

Re: Good Morning!
A Mail Box you lucky thing. So far this winter we have lost ours 3 times, the last time bent the post so badly it will have to be straightened and rewelded in spring. The Twp. does replace it now once I said I had the plough driver going so fast on security video it was dangerous! Last Xmas they upended the plough in a ditch on our single lane dead end road. Took them all day to move it so the milk truck could get back in.
