KB, I'm not looking to keep that breed of chicken around. Some switch ups this year :)Killerbunny wrote:We've been seeing lots of deer too in the fields around us. I suppose the lack of snow lets them forage more easily.
Lovely morning out there with the softly falling snow.
BTW Sandy, why don't you give that girl a chance to be a broody later if she shows the inclination again?

Re: Good Morning!
Well off to go do chores and clean out the big coop! I think I am going to put my three Orpington hens in with my FBCM and round up all the old girls and bring them over to the dooryard coop and let them retire over here with Big Old What's His Face! The Call ducks will be grumpy with new room mates but they can get over it! One advantage of having the big old roo over here is that he is keeping the 3 call drakes in line!

Re: Good Morning!
Good morning! Been seeing deer too. I think they KNOW when hunting season has ended.... because it seems you don't see them as much, when the hunt is on. Of course, ours is extended 2 weeks, right beside and behind the farm, for the natives to express their 'rights'. Trouble is..... they think that they can hunt on our property, and we even had one guy tell us, that he could do whatever he wanted on 'our' land. Thats what he thinks.
So... every day, twice a day sometimes, we quad back there.... hubby goes back usually every day anyhow, to play with his 'train set', and its funny to watch them (the natives), RUN for the conservation side. If you think you have the right.. then why do you run for cover when you see us?
On the other hand... if they would come in and ASK permission, then things wouldn't be so one sided on both sides. We've seen 42 deer at once around here.... theres no shortage, and the damage they do to the crops around those bush sided fields amounts to about 5 acres worth of NO crop. Well, that includes coons/squirrels and coyotes. We watched coyotes IN our silage field, half of it was off... and they were literally jumping up, and taking cobs off the corn stalks, and eating them. I have pictures of 3 adults and 2 youngs ones doing just that, but the camera I took the picture of them, well, they were just little black dots in the photo.
My turkeys are being PITA'S.... they all want to take me on... except the 2 oldest guys, who are so sweet. The one that jumped up and bit me right on the end of the nose.... and the damage was INSIDE my one nostril, with a little nick on the outside barely noticable... when I bent over to put the water bucket down. If I had of been paying attention, I would have thought twice before letting him get so close, unguarded. He was doing that warning chortle...but hes been a sweet boy, since I rescued him from the pens of others ages ago, when they ganged up on him and literally pecked his young non existant snood off. So... he looks like of funny without one now. I grabbed him by the neck, and yelled in his face. Didn't do any good.. it was game on by then. Didn't help that my snowsuit I wear in the barn is blue and red, lol. Probably look like a big turkey head coming at them.
I guess I'd better get out to the barn. Sat in here by the fire long enough. Cold today!! Only -2C this morning, but going to be -6C this afternoon, and warm up again over night. Stupid back and forth weather.

Re: Good Morning!
Morning everyone! snowing down this way this morning. listening to the radio you'd think we were on the east coast last week! LOL. it's only 2 cm forecasted, but feels like -11 with that wind. really, honestly, it's not that bad out. weird drivers...but that happens just about every day!
clawton-you need to get to sleep by 7 to get up at 330! LOL. great news is your cornish girl i got from you has settled in beautifully and i got the first egg from her yesterday! at least i have 2 girls in there, and got 2 eggs, so one must be hers. i'm probably going to start baking turkey eggs this weekend...will let you know. they're all fertilized, and laying an egg a day! i think the red palm boy has probably managed to get to all the girls, but no saying if the other two boys (a red slate and a royal palm wannabe) managed to breed anyone on the QT....(probably)....so who knows what (if anything) will hatch. i didn't have much success last year hatching, but we'll see how it goes this year...
SandyM-you'll do just fine on the PAL. Just remember don't point the end at anyone, and make sure it's unloaded, every single time!!!!! even if the examiner checks it, or it's open on the table, cycle it, look in it, make sure it's empty!!!! if i can pass, you can too! LOL. it's not that hard, and a lot of common sense....don't point it at anything you don't intend to shoot. good luck!
KB: I sure hope muppet continues to get better! sucks to be sore....and hate seeing sore animals sigh. i think it's actually rougher on the owner than the animal! hang in there muppet!!!! keep eating and drinking!
BVF: i know which bird will be easter dinner!!!! LOL. little buggers. that red slate i have actually comes right up to me and leans against me....LOL. such a honey. if they ever got nasty...well, i wear a green coat in the barn, so....so far so good. they might think you are competing with that impressive blue and red thing going on!
okay, onwards with the day. it's friday. looking forward to the weekend. lots to do. field cleanup for the horse paddock....they have a smaller paddock for the winter so it's less cleaning, but it's all frozen so i'll get the tractor out and push it. easier that way. and feed run, and well, wondered what the cats were doing in the barn.....um. well, i need some stall dry because the little buggers are using the horse stall as a litter box. the little jerks.
like i don't have 2 boxes in the house for them, and 112 acres of SAND....(yes, there is virtually no snow at my place and the sand is not that frozen). spoiled little twits. so i guess i'll be cleaning the "litter box" and putting in some stall dry too. then i need to figure out how to get this 200 pound steel metal table out of the driveshed and into the barn.....hm....should be interesting. AND the rest of my veseys order is at the postoffice for pickup tonight!
very very stupidly excited about that.....oh, and planting sweet potato shoots this weekend too! some of them are vining up my window blinds....um.
Hope everyone has a great day!

Re: Good Morning!
Good morning! Blowing like crazy here snow drifts right across the highway, not fond of that.
Deer are finishing the hedges they didn't strip last year, they are very systematic about it and yes I agree not too much snow makes everything accessible.
I spend 30 years planting cedar hedges and they will finish it in 2 seasons. Oh well, I guess I don't need as much privacy as I required 30 years ago.
Off to figure out seriously who is going to be bread to whom, and more importantly, what am I going to do with the 4-5 excess roosters.
Have a safe one!

Re: Good Morning!
Thanks WWLady. Think I'll vomit over the stress on my drive ... But I'll trump the cards by the end of the course lol! I'm good that way.
And now that I have some extra pointers (thank you) I'm more confident. Just have to google 'cycle it' before I get there. :/

Re: Good Morning!
cycling a gun is simply moving the action (the part where the shotshell or cartridge goes in and is fired) open and closed so if there is a shell or a cartridge inside it comes out.
just pretend you are ARNOLD (said in german austrian accent-AHRNOLD-ahll be bahhk....) with the shotgun...but use both hands, they're heavy LOL
you'll be fine. if you are very stressed out about the exam, come visit me and i'll put you through a mock exam....it's so much easier that you are fearing, STOP WORRYING.

Re: Good Morning!
Glad your getting er done Sandy! one other piece of advice is never touch the trigger at all period. all the guns will be deactivated and 100% safe but still... if your pretending to fire the gun in a safe direction... just say fire or shoot. you'll do fine!

I found the folks weren't out to catch you out, they were there to make sure you're safe and educate. You'll do fine.
