@Ontario Chick , just wondering, does the December 20 date conflict with something else? if not, is it because you don't want them around for another 20+ days, too close to Christmas?
It's not another 20+ days, it's another 49 days !!!!!
The December 20 is just too risky in the weather department, it's an hour drive thru countryside, if the wether c.....d out we would be stuck with them until next spring.

OK so why don't we do a mass processing here along with my hideous cockerels, all of them are ghastly (8) and my suspicions were confirmed by OC. End of November works for me.
You remember the #1 directive..?... Less work for the elderly!!! :)
Missed that one again!

Thanks for explaining - now I get it. The weather/ travel conditions are a significant factor to consider in December, for sure.
BTW, the reason my 20+ days calculation was wrong is because I counted number of days after your original processing date (end of November), rather than current date.

@Ontario Chick , I need to do a few birds myself by the end of November....if you (and @Killerbunny ) want to bring your birds here, I will happily do all the hard work for you. I only have a dozen or three of my own that need to be freezered this year--hatching got off to such a late start this year that many have to grow out for a while yet before I consider them. Less than 50 birds is hardly worth a tank of propane for the scalder ;) I have a plucker, the rest is easy for me. If you're interested, I will get back to you on available November dates when I get my November work schedule on Thursday. I know I have this coming Saturday (the 4th?) off, but that's too soon, I've already got too much planned for that day.

You are a gem amongst poultry people Jan, mine have left the premises :)
but I hope KB is going to take you up on the offer because there is a batch that "needs" to go and I am afraid Gill will let them linger. ;)

If she's game I am! I won't let them linger but DH is another story. I don't need it to get to a cockerel emergency! 3 of the pullets I hope have homes and I will post the rest. Update, the little pullet that got pecked in the eye does just fine but the membranes got dmaged, it just waters sometimes. Another of the pullets got the "cute" gene and expects to be picked up for a cuddle before she will go to coop!

I have 8 turkeys to cull also, they are an easy pluck but are heavy! I had to use a shotgun the last time I did any. Fortunately that doesn't notice around here.

Good morning and another rant, I may get disinvited from this forum if it continues this way.
Sooo there is this creek winding it's way thru the back of our property.
The water goes up in the spring and in a very dry summer it pretty much dries dow to few puddles.
The whole area is zoned "Hazard". Turns out it doesn't bother the City of Ottawa planning department and they gave a building permit to somebody to build on the lot adjoining the creek/wetland.
The developer spent 35 years throwing anything he came across in to the wetland to make it look like a building lot and sold it.
The new owner thinks there is a beaver dam (that's what he was looking for when I cam across him and friend.
I told him there is no beaver dam, just a result of wet summer, but if he didn't want to take my word for it, City of Ottawa was his recourse, not traipsing thru my backyard.
Sooo City of Ottawa sent an Inspector from
Public Works and Environmental Services / Parks, Forestry and Surface Water Services...
Lovely guy who asked if I would be willing to show him the creek, so I took him back showed him the dock we have there and how high the water usually gets and he asked... No Beaver Dam? and I said NO Beaver Dam. and He said OK, I will tell them there is no Beaver dam.
How much do you think was the cost to the taxpayers?
Couldn't help myself and mentioned that as long as there are building permits issued for flood plains there are going to be problems and let's not blame the beavers. :)
