Afternoon all! Well i think we are actually getting ahead a bit. Potatoes are planted, including the ones i got from someone here on pto...cant wait! And a row of spinach and about 200 carrots....and some peas. Its hot anf humid...like 24C here! And feeling like storms coming...first grass cut of the year too. Full incbator-i got the water reservoir system for the sportsman. Definitely worth it!! Guineas are in the freezer. They were simply too noisy starting at 430 this morning i totally expected hate mail from the neighbours!!! Had company yesterday for breakfast-we had hydro....this afternoon is laundry and house cleaning and cleaning waters upstairs in the barn. We just pulled out everything in the one corner of the barn to find starling nests....argh. and pressure washed allthe bird poop off everything. Still a bit more to do....nice to have it clean again. Swallows returned last week. Onl birds i havent see are the hummingbirds now.
So i think spring is here. Oh and ticks....like crazy. Yucky ticks. Everywhere.

Never understood the May long weekend thing because it really only applies to tender annuals. I always get lectures because of the Brit accent but I like to get my cold weather crops planted late April if not a week earlier. Our 95% last frost date here is mid April not that that means anything anymore.

My frost free date here is routinely 4 weeks before last frost. Potatoes take 2 weeks or so to break the surface so i plant those now. Spinach only sprouts well in cooler weather which is now....if i wait too long for carrots the carrot fly gets them while young and they are slow to sprout and like cooler weather. Same with peas. And i want 2 crops of peas this year so one early and one later. We picked asparagus tonight for dinner!!
I saw some this morning i swear were only 2 inches tall and just cut 20 spears easily 8-9 inches long!!! Of course my cherry trees are going to bloom soon so we will have another frost for sure. Lol. Forsythia is in bloom with tulips amd daffodils this year. And the dandelions. But i let the horses out and they ate all the yellow dandelion parts...so. raspberries are looking awesome and our grapes made it too. I can say that i am physically pooched this weekend. We did lots!!!

Hydro emerdency line recording " expected power back Monday at 4pm" .?????
I can only assume they don't want to pay overtime?
Have a good one! A
It's not that...they have crews out everywhere from Napanee thru to Ottawa and beyond...but expect more of this in the future..teetery poles, weakened wires, how can it not happen again? ...it boggles my mind on why there is such a resistance to go off the grid electrically, especially in the countryside...never could figure out why hydro doesnt promote this, as the infrastructure to serve the rural customer is huge and onerous to maintain for very little return...oh well, I keep spreading the word...in the meantime, I have a couple of trees to turn into firewood... :run:

Well, hydro back Sunday evening , glad we have a generator, as long as the sump pump and the freezer are going, all is well.
One of our friendly Hydro workers got on a local TV and said Hydro didn't call in any extra crews, that's why the clean up was taking so long. Wonder if he still has a job?
Would love solar, but surrounded by huge trees no place to put panels.

So, I'm driving home from work last night, around 3 a.m. In my peripheral vision, I see a good-sized, light coloured thing flying out of the trees at the ditch on my left, to cross the road. With my limited view of it, I judged it to be about 7 feet off the ground, and figured it would easily clear my car, and why not? Why would a night-flying bird want to stay close to the ground? I was wrong, and it smashed into the top of my quarter panel with a huge bang. So loud I that after I stopped, I checked for damage, and bits of exploded bird. There was nothing, not even a feather caught in my roof racks, or a greasy spot on the paint. I turned around to make sure it wasn't lying suffering in a ditch. In the middle of the road, I see a large flat squirrel lying in a puddle of fluid, and figured I must have hit an owl carrying dinner, and went looking for signs--blood spatters, feathers, something; but whatever it was was nowhere to be found and left no trace behind. Somewhat relieved I hadn't killed an owl, I returned my attention to the road. In the road is the cutest thing I have ever seen: soft, thick, beautiful tawny fur, enormous expressive eyes that took in the light of my flashlight in such a way that made me think it had been dead awhile already. I had a fleeting thought that I had killed a chinchilla! Then I realize it's moving, following me with its' head. As I approach, it gets up and tries to run, but only succeeds at scampering in circles. The puddle it left behind is urine, and there is no blood or obvious injuries, not even a limp...it just cannot walk a straight line. I caught it, which was harder than it sounds, tucked it in a toolbox and brought it home. I didn't want to leave it, having survived such a collision only to be run over or snatched up by a hungry coyote. Left the toolbox on the kitchen table with a DO NOT OPEN note. No matter how cute, I didn't want the strange creature loose in my house. I figured he'd recover, or die, but I didn't want to be responsible for allowing some mangy coyote to live another day.
Took him outside a little while ago. He looked at me for a minute out of one big beautiful eye (the other was swelled almost shut) and then jumped out and dashed (in a straight line)for the nearest tree, faster than a thought.
It was a flying squirrel. It had tried to land on top of my car! I didn't even know we HAD flying squirrels in our neck of the woods.
