Re: Good Morning!
looks like someone wasn't too impressed with being in a vehicle! i hope she fits right in!!!! congrats! sure can see the hound!
well, dumb day at work today. too much to do, not enough time or energy to do it all in. major challenges facing us there, like almost perfect grant reviews with no funding....looks like more to write then this summer. and tighten the belts a little bit more. lots of equipment breaking...sigh. just from being old, like 20 years old....and no money to replace it. tis the way science research goes i guess.
just leaves me feeling like it was a very unsatisfactory day today. so i shall drown my blahs in a stupid scifi movie (or maybe half because i won't stay awake that long) and maybe a glass of wine.
good news is my tomatoes decided to sprout today. at least a few of them! and some more asparagus is coming up-that the frost hasn't nuked yet.
lost one of my original wheaten ameraucana hens today. she was only 6 years old. but that now leaves me with 2 boys and 1 girl....and a bunch of ameraucana x marans easter eggers, so i have a feeling i'll be making some wheaten and blue wheaten easter eggers for a while until i get some pea combed blue layers back....these birds desperately need rederiving anyways, they're small and the egg size is small, and while their colour is nice, they need help in the way of some new blood. so. i'll weed out the feathered legs first and the egg colour/comb hopefully in the next 2 years. or i'll sell the lot and move on LOL. i'm a sucker for punishment so project it is.
hope everyone has a great night

Puppies !!!!!
Love puppies, I think I may need one! :)
Planted parsley this morning, and moved some chives in to a new bed, feel very accomplished.
WLLady , really, another project? You can't save them all you know.
Have a sunny one!

Re: Good Morning!
Good morning! At least it was at 6am. I haven't been back out to the barn since. Just finished my second cup of coffee and I'm out the door.
Lots of stuff happened this week. I feel kind of stupid, and have likely racked up more than $300 in vet bills besides, that technically didn't need to happen.
A cow that has twinned twice already, was showing signs of discomfort and a goop plug one evening. Probably Monday. Days go by... I have no idea what day it is half the time.
So... morning comes, and the goop looks like infected snot. Blood on her tweet hairs. (sorry if too graphic for the faint ones here).
We get her in... and get her checked out by the vet. Not dilated much... but some... figures 24 or so hours. Feels like a smallish calf... head is sideways.... (didn't like that... but thought time enough for calf to straighten itself out). We put her in a pen.
Two days later..... Yesterday... all day nothing... bagged up more.... so checked on her throughout the day. To make matters even worse, went upstairs to throw straw down for the cows... and see a cow that calved 2 days before, laying on her calf's head/neck. Run like a mad bastard down to Gary at the side of the barn where he was shovelling out old silage... and we both make it out to her. She gets up right away, but the calf is dead. A beautiful black heifer. MOMENTS before hand.. it and all the other 6 were doing laps in the area, while the cows ate their breakfast.
Not a stupid heifer, and not a cow too ancient to give a damn....
Poor thing. How heartbreaking for her. Right away, she knew it was dead. She started bawling and trying to shove it around. Then she just stood by it. I KNOW she knew she killed it. Most times, they would just suspect by your presence, that you may have done something to it. Gary took it out this morning.
So.....one aborted earlier.. and now this death. 36 to go.
So... get home from bus... and grey cow inside has either the membrane hanging from water bubble... or more coming from calving too long.. which I knew couldn't be the case from all the micro management going on. Shes laying down... but not pushing. Classic calf backwards presentation.... and perhaps twins tangled? Would NOT be the first time that has happened.... and ended up with a backwards dead twin pulled out.
Anyhow, called the vet and before we could even catch her, he was here. Long story short... chains on, pulled out a BIG bull calf. Perfect baby. Sucked within hours. Good.
Like Gary says.... the vet bill would have been the same no mater what the outcome. We DO have a beauty bull calf, that is alive.
Well... Colleen is coming later this morning, to help me clean the cemetery. Too many little tree suckers growing up within it. BAD us, for not taking care of it. Reunion this summer, and people will want to go gawk at it. Some of the stones are SO old... you can barely read them. We will also clean off a few years of leaf mould and dirt off them. Bonus.. shes stopping at our shared feed store and bringing me chick starter!! Yay. A trip I don't have to make.
Then maybe after bus... going to Northland Nursery for CHEAP trees/perennials... and other stuff with Melissa. GREAT place.
WLLADY and Admin.. will be down Saturday barring any 'stupid stuff', to grab some pepper plants/plastic for the garden... guinea eggs ... go to Dam's seeds and bringing me some fertile eggs for an old Turkey hen who's decided to set... but has dud eggs.
Well, I'd better commence my day. As much as I'd like to sleep. lol.

Re: Good Morning!
Sorry to hear about the loss of two calves, Bayvista. Here's hoping for no more issues- nothing but healthy calves and cows. What kind of trees are you looking to get?
Chantelle has been busy hauling the horses back and forth from the track. So far, all but one are looking real good in their work outs. One big mare, Situation Critical, had last year off due to a mysterious stifle/hip/back, maybe, issue, and yesterday she ran off with a very experienced jockey exercising her. Apparently she's feeling better.
Chantelle also took our 7 month old lgd, Chunk, to get spayed yesterday and received a call from the vet's office saying that once they opened Chunk up they discovered that she was in coming into heat and they were trying to deal with a lot of bleeding. That was a tough call to get, but thankfully they got everything under control and Chunk seemed herself when I left for work this morning. When Chantelle went to pick Chunk up she sent me a text saying she couldn't believe that she was having to lift all 88 lbs of our puppy into the car by herself. I replied that with the spaying she was probably only 86 lbs.
Also getting revved up for lacrosse. Coaching my daughter's Junior Paperweight team and running our local Major Series team- lots on the go..... Oh, and I'm going to pick up a small order of ducklings from PP tomorrow! Crossing my fingers for decent quality!
Cheers all!
