Good Morning!

Post by JimW » Mon Apr 17, 2017 6:24 pm

My relatives went back home to London and Toronto this morning, so nice quiet day to get a few things done. My "tempo" car shelter that I store a bunch of useful and unless stuff in is pretty much destroyed, so I have been clearing it out so I can dismantle it next weekend. I plan to fix the frame and re-purpose it with a new tarp as a rain cover over my one chicken run. Started weasel proofing my quail shack, as I have a few young quail about ready to move into my quail breeding cages, plus I have ordered quail eggs from Alberta for shipment mid-May.

Reports of some bullhead and perch biting so will probably try a little shore fishing one day this week after work. Dropping the boat off to the shop later this week for Spring tune up, should be out of the water soon.

I think it will be leftover turkey again tonight, we had out big Easter dinner Saturday night, so leftovers round 1 was last night, round 2 tonight.

Hope everyone is having a good one.

Good Morning!

Post by Bayvistafarm » Mon Apr 17, 2017 7:47 pm

Good day!! Its been a busy weekend. I'm still not 100% feeling the best.... and the kids have had me busy babysitting (saturday Mason... 9 months)... 10am until 6 pm..... and today, Sawyer from 8am until 4:45pm. We went to the park this morning, Melissa met us there, Heather (daughter in law( with Jacob, and then she went for McDonalds for lunch for us all... then to Tims.. then to Beer store to take Jess a tea... and Sawyer a short visit with his ma.... then to another park closer to home... then home... Robert and 'wife', and baby were here, picking up a chair from Colleen, and some steel from the house roof... they visited abit... then Jess home... then barn.... then cow check.. and getting a stubborn stupid calf to suck.

It was born Saturday night. At 11:30 when I went to the barn to check... it was running around. The next night.. and it looked good all day, running with her, saw it 'pretending" I know now.. to drink... it wasn't until I went out with the camera to take pictures, that I noticed how gaunt and ribby it looked. I pushed it from the field to the barn, and its idiot mother followed so far... then ran back to the other 'white' calf born a day before hers.... locked it inside and went in and mixed up some pouched colostrum. When I WAS out there, it was trying to suck.. but everything but near the udder. Brisket.... balls of poop on her leg.... belly... tried to get up under other cows... and got kicked for its troubles... ugh.

I mixed the milk and it drank it right down from the bottle. Then tried for quite a while, before she would get that 'light bulb' shining above her head... that maybe she should come check this calf out I had a hold of. I got her inside with it... in the pen.. with silage so she would stand still... and it drank from the cow with guidance from me. If I walked away while it was latched on.. it would follow me.

I was sweating with all this effort... and madder than all get out... but once it was content, finally, it went and lay down. Gary had to help her this morning. Then at noon. I went down after babysitting tonight, and I 'think' its got it... it wasn't particularly hungry... but did suck the front teat abit on its own while I was down there.

I expect that crap from a bull calf... not a heifer.

Oh well. Hopefully she got the antibodies in time. We will soon know.

good morning all!

busy work week...still only half time, but that's okay, it's more than enough! i get home and end up sleeping for a couple of hours before feeling like i have the energy to do anything else. Trying to walk more and i think standing up straight it getting easier.....i think. amazing how hard that is when all the muscles are all trying to heal. eons better than before surgery, and i'm itching to get doing more and more. but i am sure i'm not fused yet, so....trying to be ultra careful still.

had "loaned" 3 chickens to someone last summer and they were complaining they didn't get eggs after about 10 days. so i had gone and checked out their set up and well, their dog spent the entire day peering into the pen they were in. they've asked for chickens again this year, and i told them to put plywood or something up so they aren't always seeing a dog RIGHT THERE jumping up and down at the outside of the pen. i have a couple rhode island reds for them.....and they've been laying 5 eggs a week for me each, so.....if they don't lay at their place it's got to be the housing!

yep, dumb cows. at least they aren't mean BVF, hopefully it has learned by now and will be growing like crazy soon! locking down more turkeys today, and set the last batch of chicken eggs yesterday. hope to have all my hatching out of the way by the end of may. hope everyone has a great day. opened the barn up today, nice and warm this afternoon! yay! can't wait to play in the greenhouse later and see if anything has sprouted yet.

Good morning!! Another calf this morning. From a heifer. Same sire as the other 2.... charolais bull, and a heifer calf to boot. Hopefully its not as stupid as its sister.

The bulls name is Zeal.. Here is a picture of him as a yearling, and mature.

If these calves grow well, and thrive... they will all be retained in the herd as replacements. So glad so far 3 heifers. This year all the calves born will be from our angus bull... and I don't like breeding the daughters back to their dad.. and then keep THEM.

The stupid one is still inside... and we brought the new heifer in, so she can be by herself with the calf... and bond up and hopefully it sucks before long, without getting confused being out amongst 44 others.

Going shopping shortly with Melissa and Mason. Doing a Costco run, my mom and mother in law need a few things. My parents are coming down from Paisley on Friday, her for a eye surgery.. cataracts.. one eye now.. other eye in a week.....

Cold in here. May build a fire soon. Locked down some eggs last night. Should be ALL EE's.

Well, better go do something. Have a good day!

Nice looks bull there BVF.

Cooler here today but nice and sunny. Candled my turkey eggs from BC today, it is day 10, so far out of 23 eggs 19 look like they have development!!! Still lots of time for me to screw up, but looking good so far.

About 100 chicken and turkey eggs going in the incubator tomorrow.

Good morning, rainy here, but greenery is busting, so no complaints, garlic is out and 6" in six days, so must be happy!
Narcises are out and Day lilies are being trimmed by deer, so time to cover them up with netting and the circle starts anew :)
Have a green one!
