good morning everyone! checked the weather station and it was 5C outside.....ha ha. i think we need a replacement....it's really -11 at my place....and the barn was nice inside, not warm by any stretch but not -11. it was -3 inside. heated dog bowls all did their jobs, and everyone had liquid water. yay! i love having hydro in the barn, and no wind in there too! what a novelty still!

sandy, most likely a coon given it's the first colder snap this winter so far. (who thought i'd be saying that on the 4rth of january!)
Gizmo, if they have artifical light in the coop you can move their light cycle to later at night....or try just putting sunflower seeds onto the roosts beside them, they'll eat them from on the roosts-at least mine do. i must agree 530 was/is way too early. 6 even was way too early. i kept waking up every 30 minutes last night "is it time to get up to go to work yet"....sigh. having slept until at least 7am every day on the break. LOL. back to real life.....

hope everyone has a great day, and a great start back to school or work or whatever else they're doing!

well, weather station still says +5. my chickens definitely said otherwise! one of my heated dog dishes seems to not do well at -13....hm. still had some open water, but ringed with ice. the rest were just fine. so i'll have to switch that one out in the future-if we get another cold snap like this one. all the little birds were fine though, under the heat lamp, but no shivering. yay! they're only about 10 weeks old...fully feathered, but not big by any stretch. i had moved them into one pen and left the one feeder full of layer thinking they wouldn't eat it, and all these little boys in there have completely emptied it! they also have chick starter....and devour that like it's going out of style in this weather. so they got warm water this morning. even the brooder was okay, the water had frozen where it wasn't under the brooder plate, so hot water went in there, but everyone was peeping away and eating.....i threw a couple of hand warmers in there too to be laid on. i'm sure they'll like that. i just kept thinking this morning, man i must have been tougher last year....because it was colder than this ALL winter!

i'm so glad the truck was in the barn. no scraping! whoohoo! some extra energy to the horses this morning (beet pulp and oats) i really need to go and buy a bag of cracked corn...or two. looks like a beautiful day coming up though. sunrise was gorgeous. must have seen 30 deer too this morning. just hanging out puttering along in no rush.....

hope everyone has a great day!

Different heaters have different set temps they can handle . Best to check instructions before buying . Luck

My heated dog dish worked like a charm last winter never iced up, sadly I think it's done, all iced up today and it wasn't nearly as cold as most days last year. Guess I have to buy a new one. Why don't things last more than a year or 2?

If its a green 1 gallon farm something or another brand you can get thermostats for them. I am ordering 10 or so....have 3 to fix.....the bottoms are held on with clips...prying with a screwdriver gets it open.

Good Morning All,
Hope your new pride and joy arrived in fine shape Al.
Ice slid off the roof of the barn yesterday, scaring all the chickens and me too, thought the whole thing was coming down on us,
Sooo, January thaw? I could get used to this. One week of Snowy winter over the Christmas holidays, then January thaw, then couple weeks of good snowshoeing weather and then Spring. We could all be hatching in March and putting the chicks on grass in April.
That's my plan so far ;)
Have a great wknd!
