Good Morning!

Post by Ontario Chick » Fri Aug 12, 2016 9:57 am

Good morning,
Spend most of yesterday ferrying fresh waterers with ice to the chickens, it's a bit scary when it gets that hot, once the water reaches certain temperature they don't drink it and at 40 humidex things could go south pretty fast.
I swear at the end of the day, every time I brought in fresh water they gathered around it to get cool, not to drink, just lean on the container.
The two flocks go out separately, Wyandottes in the morning and Ameraucanas in the aft.
As you can imagine when the door opens there is a huge rush to get outside..... last two days the Ameraucanas rushed outside, turned around and rushed right back in!!
Never happened before.
We were supposed to get rain today, started overcast, unfortunately I see the sun peak out.
Keep cool!

Just came in from freshening birds water and giving a bit of watermelon treats. Just as I was finishing it started to rain, it was pouring down when I made it into the house. Ya!!!

The rain lasted 5 minutes. :(

Hopefully we get some more.

OH boy. It is thundering like crazy!! The windows are vibrating and a few things on the walls are vibrating. Umm, I hate thunder, especially bad ass thunder. But it's sunny. Must be coming in from Lake Ontario direction but I'm not going to see what it looks like in that direction. :(

Weather network says severe thunderstorm warning.

Didn't get to the auction this morning. I knew if I went I'd be to heat exhausted to do what needed to get done outside. So I was adult and did my chores.
Silkie mom is driving me bonkers!! 2-3 times a day I'm taking her out of a nesting box. Grrrr! She's stubborn. It's too darn hot to go broody, doesn't she know this? :)
Besides I don't have one fertilized egg lol.

Does anyone else flip flop back and forth between what breeds they want to raise. I wanted out of barred rocks, mostly because my second batch from freys was crappy, moody and poor colours etc., I have one more girl to ship off, but I need her for eggs right now, then I'm keeping my 2 nicest and prettiest ones. Then I think oh might as well get a handsome boy and raise some rocks again. But after those holy hellians I had, I'm hesitant. But then I think of how well they laid through the winter and kept their keep. Flip flop. I have Legbars that are very young and likely won't lay till spring, but these Easter Eggers should start end of September - octoberish.

Then I think I'll keep 5 hens and keep many more ducks. Then I think sell the house, the flock, and property and buy a home on wheels and travel and kayak and live a little. Then I go to the grocery store and have to deal with the general public and can't imagine not having my sanity sanctuary, aka home.

Middle age is driving me bonkers. It's like I can't think clear enoigh to make a decision. Ahhh well, could be worse. Could not have any decisions to make.

Well, I've rambled on. What I do best.

Lmao Sandy; i've become more of a "chicken broker" than a "buy and hold" guy.
We've been on the farm the last 5 years. I have gone "in and out" of rouen ducks, french guineas, coturnix quail, ameraucanas, partridge chanteclers three times, sebastopol geese, embden geese, ringneck pheasants, buckeyes, and now my dark cornish and tufted roman geese are for sale. (If they don't sell no big deal.)
This "sportsman" incubator has me buying eggs and selling birds all the time. (And i am having fun.)
