Re: Good Morning!
Morning,
Got half the Silkie pen replaced yesterday. Was very slippery up top and I saw crutches in my future so I packed it up and will wait for it to warm just enough that it drys a little more.
Then I cleaned up all the wet straw in the Silkie pen and added to the compost pile ...took tarp off as per recommendations (thank you) and hopefully the cooking begins. It was like a pile of gold for the chickens ..l they spent the rest of the afternoon there sorting through.
I'm not liking the straw in the Silkie pen ... When it gets wet it stays wet for too long and I can't see that being beneficial for my silks. Not sure what my next step is for them .... Gotta put my thinking hat on. :lightbulb:
Loving the pile of
! Crazy chickens.
Have a great day everyone!

Good morning all!! Anybody sick of this wet whether? My ducks enjoy it but I don't, looking at how dirty they are makes me feel bad! I wish it would just stay frozen, no more of this cold-warm whether!

Re: Good Morning!
It was nice to see OC and her hubby for a visit before Xmas. Lucky was a good boy and only had a tiny run at her. Strutted around showing off his ladies LOL! Vian happily showing off his solar stuff.

Re: Good Morning!
It was a very nice visit, not counting the hairy driving conditions, and I will admit to a tiny crush on the BSW, now I know they are delicious on top of being amazingly beautiful and KB carries them around so they don't have to get their feet dirty
Stil shoveling ourselves out this morning so I guess winter has finally arrived.
Could have been worse, might have been in Victoria for the Earthquake.
Have a safe one.

Sandy, can't really make much sense of your top picture, but it looks impressive?
You certainly wouldn't want Silkies on damp bedding, but....
If the straw stays wet, it has probably more to do with not enough ventilation then anything else.

For some reason my pictures post sideways. But it's looking up into the new panelling for their 'roof' on the exterior pen.Ontario Chick wrote:Sandy, can't really make much sense of your top picture, but it looks impressive?

Their pen 'floor' so to speak, is concrete patio stones. I'm thinking that's why the straw is staying wet. It doesn't get absorbed into the ground, so the straw just soaks it up...I'm open to suggestions?
It's great and easy to clean etc. Which I really really like ... But it's causing me some headaches for foot warmth for these guys. Not that they're complaining.

Re: Good Morning!
I am sure you are right on the patio blocks being a problem.
I personally would try a layer of wood shavings for absorbency, topped with straw for insulation.
wouldn't be as good for your compost, (too much carbon) but would probably do the trick for keeping the bedding dry.
At this time of the year, if you get the balance right, all you need to do is "fluff up" occasionally and add a flake of fresh straw.
