Good Morning!

Post by Bayvistafarm » Tue Jul 12, 2016 11:54 am

Wow, when the sun comes out, whew! Hot!!

I pulled weeds and watered the haskap bushes. But, will hold off and water tonight. Never did get to the road. My petunia's may be too far gone. Oh well. Next year.

I ate a small bean out there... and a cucumber. They will be full force soon. I have them heavily mulched with straw, the cuc's with a soaker hose buried by the plants, under the straw. That way, they don't get wet... and hopefully hold off that blight. Although I do see some of it starting. On a couple tomato plants too. Ugh. Must be in the soil.

bred another couple beefers... a heifer, and a cow. All to the charolais. We switched to an even easier calving one. In the last week.. we had 2 new calves. I believe 5 or 6 to go.

Got the oldest grandson hanging with us today. lol. Hes such a quiet city kid. We may be going to his ball game in Hagersville tonight.

So..... I think I will clean in here today. HOT out to do stuff in the sun. It will heat up in here too.

thinking of rain. Dreamed of it even.

Good Morning!

Good morning!! I got up early. Not too early, but went out the lane with Gary for the paper at 6am.

The corn is working on tasseling, and thats not good. I don't think much of it at all, is over my head, and I'm pretty short.

I didn't want to come in when the walk was over, so I started a couple soaker hoses, and then took a walk with the shovel around the cow pasture and axed the thistles that are blooming. I took care of tons in the spring, but there was still plenty out there. I've been doing this for a few years, and I think we have them pretty much beat. Just the ones blowing in from wherever..... and it seems to be not many. I'm taking down the ones in the fencerow, around the pastures, so hay is beside that. They get cut regularly, if there are any out there.

The baby and mom and dad are doing good. But, he's pretty yellow. They've been back to the hospital every day, getting his blood checked. His heels are pretty prickled. His number is 271. They treat at 280. They asked Melissa if his whites of his eyes were yellow, because he doesn't open them very far yet... but last night he did when I held him, and they were good and white. So, here hoping hes getting better. If not, today they will be admitted until tomorrow noon, and he will have to be under the lights. Good thing is... shes breastfeeding, gets to stay, and they actually have a unit they keep IN the room with her. Other than taking away for bloodwork, shes been with him every minute. I know shes getting right tired of going out every single day. Good thing Scott has this week off, because he can drive, and carry the baby in and out.

I can't believe how good Melissa looks now after the birth! Only abit of a belly sag... I don't think I every recovered from childbirth, lol.

Going to do bookwork today. Stay inside. Finish the bathrooms, and clean the one bedroom, thats been a hatching/brooding nursery. Smells like a barn in there. Shavings on the floor... ugh. I am a major slob. Also, continue to clean out one or two of the 4 deep chest freezers we have. Such food gone bad, mostly veggies I didn't get to, the odd bag of bread/buns.... and bones of beef animals. What holly doesn't get, they go to the bush.

Well, better go do something.

My supervisor informed the crew that it is 47C (not including humidity) in the upper elevations of the plant this morning. I think I'll be avoiding the upper elevations of the plant.

Good morning!
Watered the garden sprinkler on for an hour, all I dare to use.
Re-seaded some mechlun, and harvested some Boston lettuce and cukes for supper, thats all I can think of eating at this point :)
found one 4'x6' lattice missing from the potato bed, assume a dear was harvesting potato foliage and took the trellis with him/her.
found it in the ditch beside the road, glad it didn't run across the road with it, that would be a pretty startling sight for any drivers passing by.
will head out for lunch to the nearest air-conditioned restaurant and then just sit in the shade for rest of the day.
Have a cool one!

So glad we live in a forest! Step outside of it and I would swear I'm cooking. Good thing coops are in the shade most of the day.

Going to work inside today, cleaning and organizing.

Candled the last batch of shipped eggs. Doesn't look very promising. Maybe 10-12 out of the 24.

Time will tell.

Have 30+ chicks from broody hens so far. They are doing a fantastic job this year. Will have lots to sell this year.

Try and stay cool. Have a great day.

Well, we got some rain! 1/2 inch in the gauge. The extreme winds woke me up, and I went downstairs, I'm thinking about 1am or shortly before. Gary says things out there look so much better already!! Its still dark out there, was raining slightly about 1/2 hr ago.... but sure its quit by now. Hopefully the sun stays away, and things dont' evaporate fast.

Then I went back out about 3:30am, and opened things back up. Pretty warm up there. Idiot me left lights on up there too. Oh well. Yay!! Never so happy to have rained on hay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
