Good Morning!
Morning everyone.
First night without Josh under my roof. Who needs sleep right?
House feels big. Feels empty. Coffee without being talked too. All very new. Just me and my boy Drake. Well, good thing I have a very busy week.
Out tonight for dinner with a friend. Kayaking on Wednesday and off to Toronto on Thursday for some Legbars. Friday is the auction with a friend and to get rid of most of my cockerels that are really starting to not get along. They spend most of their day chasing each other and having stare downs. Time to go before it gets uglier. Still debating on what to do with Mr.Sterile. Time will tell.
Silkie mom just calls and clucks all day. Hopefully she'll be happy when I bring her some chicks end of week.
I need to do the beehive today. I've tried for a few days but weather wasn't right and they were extra grouchy. Yesterday I was too
ed to be concentrated enough to get in and get the work done. Today is my window of opportunity before its gets ridiculously warm again this week. I've had to save a few bees over the last few days. They have their own water with stones so they don't drown, but they apparently prefer the chicken feeder waterers. When I see them doing the back stroke they are easily picked up and I just place on a stump and watch them flap their wings and get dried off and away they go. But sometimes I haven't noticed them in time.
Hope everyone has a great day.

Good Morning!
You know. Last night on reflection I was thinking about how liberating it is to be able to hand over my PAL and purchase a shot gun/rifle and protect my flock when required. Its not a 'I have a gun' thing. It's more of the fact that I can be the protector that is required and more importantly I can do it ethically and quickly. Pitch forking and/or deep root method with a shovel didn't sit well with me and to have the access to handle it quickly and ethically sure puts the inner beast to rest.Maximus wrote:QR_BBPOST Oh!!! You want pics? I'll get to it in a few mins. It's locked up and safe :)

Good Morning!
Thanks for wrangling and delivering the rooster- he's a real looker and has settled in nicely with his new harem. Looking forward to seeing what he produces!WLLady wrote:QR_BBPOST congrats on being a new grandma again BVF! so glad everyone is happy and healthy! such good news!
well, we're here! after 45 minutes of chasing dean (dominionmlink's new rooster) around LOL. little escape artist....the hens were no problem. but he really doesn't like being caught. ah well. we prevailed. then up to drop him off...through toronto at 135km/hr bumper to bumper holy crap hang on and hold your breath kind of driving. made it though! Chantelle's new babies (fillies and foal) are absolutely gorgeous and i think the foal is definitely going to go places with a racing career....just looked at him and went "oh wow....he's awesome!".
met all the furballs, 5 i think....and then off to www's place. you guys are going to have a great piknik, what a beautiful area, and awesome place. sorry for waking you up www! great to see you and thank you for handing out the stuff at the piknik!
holy smokes rain south of ottawa, looks like it was needed! dry all the way across to quebec border....but over here it's a rainforest! such a change to have humidity in the air and dripping off the trees....
so a few last things of this estate dragging on to deal with a then we'll help out with painting and cleaning up and stuff, and maybe dunk ourselves in the lake a few times and BUG SPRAY...lol.
hopefully everyone has a wonderful week, i'm not sure how much i'll be on the board during the week.....
We have high hopes for this years crop of foals. All sired by Chantelle's stallion and out of quality mares who enjoyed very good race careers, as did the stallion! An excellent variety of bloodlines with lots of speed and longevity in the careers of the sire and dams.
If you met 5 dogs, then you met them all :), except for 2 coonhounds (1 Bluetick and 1 Plott) who wouldn't be there to great you if they were loose on the property. The two white dogs are a Maremma (female) and a Great Pyrenee (male), and despite coming to us at 5 and 9 months old from pet homes, their instinct to roam the property at night and bark at anything out of the ordinary, has quickly developed. We will likely breed these 2 next year if anyone is considering an lgd or two for their farm.
Cheers,
Dean

Good Morning!
Good morning all who come this way,
It's going to be a hot one for change, the chicks are almost 3 weeks old, so far they have had,
Heat lamp full blast, windows closed hay loft closed
Heat lamp low,
Heat lamp low, windows opened
Heat lamp off, windows and hay loft opened
Heat lamp back to ful blast, hay loft and windows closed again.......
and today just for change starting the cycle again.
starting to feel dizzy here, hope the weather settles on something for at least a week, these are going to be seriously confused birds by the time they make it to the floor of the coop, not sure what I will do with all the free time when I don't have to open and close windows and switch the heat lamp On and off
Time to trim the tomato plants so the tomatoes get more sun, move one hosta that is getting crowded, and I will be done for the day.
Have a cool one!

Good Morning!
Morning everyone!!
I hope everyone has a 'cool' plan for the next few days. Also, a good idea to check on the vulnerable during this weather. I have Popsicles and bottled water that I'm taking over to the next town this afternoon to offer to the homeless and those who are just 'there.' We don't have 'cool down' areas for them that I'm aware of, but we do have an outdoor wading pool and that's where most they seem to congregate too. So I'll be there later.
Got into my hives yesterday. Wow. I'm in awe. Just such an impressive sight to see. Got stung once. Buggers. Right on the finger. OUCH! Might of sworn and had a potty mouth for a few minutes but it hurt. Got the second shelf on so they should be good. When the humidity breaks I need to get in and make sure I've got some larva etc happening, but I got stung pretty early on and didn't feel like hanging around longer than shelf additions. Oh, I also saw a big fat bumblebee dead on one hive. They attacked it? Assuming so.
Next Thursday I have an appointment with a personal Marksman for an hour at Silverdale Gun Club. I am looking forward to the experience, gaining knowledge and comfort. Might even become a member
