Good Morning!

Post by JimW » Mon May 16, 2016 10:34 pm

Busy day today... taught my 3 morning high school classes, then hopped on a bus with my one class to go tree planting, my grade 11-12 class along with a grade 4 class planted 1500 tree seedlings (pines, soft maple and tamarack) in 1 hour and 45 minutes. To make it chicken related, we were planting an old field at Burnbrae Farms. They offered our class a tour of their farm facilities, so if we can fit it into our schedule, my class will go back for a visit to see their egg laying, cleaning and grading set up some time in June.

After tree planting, I had a staff meeting, then picked up my daughter from track & field practice, dropped her off at home to feed the birds and then went on a short road trip to meet up with Ontario Chick to pick up some Ameraucana and Columbian Wyandotte hatching eggs. Thanks OC!! These eggs will go in the incubator tomorrow with the Cream Legbar eggs I am picking up.

Got home after picking up the eggs, planted a bit of asparagus and 20 White Pineberry plants in the new raised bed that I got from Veseys. The plants were very small basically just a small clump of root, I hope they grow.

Good evening everyone. Custom hatch is coming along. Buff ducks now. Was given 17 labelled buffs and 57 muscovy. So moved all the eggs labelled buff to the hatcher on friday for lockdown. Well mild panic tonight when i found 2 buff ducks in the incubator!! So quick took them to the brooder and candled all the muscovy ducks and found another 12 buff ducks clicking and peeping!! Got them into the hatcher real quick with hubbys help...then texted the guy i am hatching for to let him know lol. Surprise!!! Guess he mislabelled some of the eggs. So i am going to have to keep a close eye the next few days on the incubator and hatcher! So is this then "duck math"? Like chicken math?

Killerbunny wrote:QR_BBPOST SO I gave her 7 eggs. I saw that 4 had hatched last night. Went there later this am and she had left her nest so I cleaned it out. SO from 7 eggs 1 was late developing and didn't hatch, 2 died in shell ready to hatch and were steamrollered. Went back just now and sat with her. She called to the babies that it was safe for them to come out. Kinda like popcorn little heads began to appear. She has 10 bouncing babies there LOL! All hers because it's a private coop.
:congrats:
To both you and the new mama!!!
Finally candled tonight at 6 days, going out tomorrow night and certainly couldn't wait until day 8 ;)
Fertility 100% in the Ameraucanas, but still only 80% in the Wyandottes, will have to be satisfied with that.
Nice meeting Jim and having another place around, raising some lovely Columbian Wyandottes :)

Afternoon all, did my gramma thing again this morning for the 1st grader this time....great little program they had at school for grandparents day, fun with little Dakota. Came home and heard some peeping from the Brinsea.....yup they are a day early but 4 of the 7 have pips...the grands will be excited when they come home....I am!
Had a big bull calf yesterday while I was feeding in the cow barn... 20 minutes from waterbag to cow standing and licking new baby....that's the way I like it!
Had an americauna hen (pullet) sitting on the eggs from her, her partner and the CCL....about 11 eggs, hadn't gathered for a few days... thought I'd pull out the milk crate they use as a nest box and put her in a rabbit hutch to keep the others from laying more on top of her. She thanked me by refusing to sit anymore and broke every one in the box by end of day...... Guess I'd better just collect and refill the Brinsea
Well I have a short cake in the oven, strawberries cut and sugared in the fridge and still have the barn feeding to do before making supper...later all, Hayladee

Good day!! Its a crappy one.... but its nice and sunny. Crappy as in the lawn mower tire is flat AGAIN, and even with the deck raised, the grass will need raking. I hate that! Its been too cold and rainy to mow, and when its nice out, its grown huge!

Had a nice white baby this morning. A heifer we AI'd. Its a bull calf of course. Oh well. Someone will think he will taste good some day. Jess, the daughter in law wanted to keep him as a bull. lol.

We have had 20 calves born so far. Was out looking at the other 21 to calve, and I am thinking an old reliable red girl may have twins. Shes twinned before. Shes not real close tho. The two new heifers that calved are GOOD mama's. Always nice to see them let the calf suck, without too much drama.

Well, its almost bus time, so I'd better get myself ready for that. I took my bus to the yard earlier, when the grass was too wet to mow for an oil change... and took up my paperwork. Glad thats done. Better that way, then have them come out with another bus to use, while they take mine away. I have too much crap stuff in that one, lol.

I see you posted Hay... YOU HAVE STRAWBERRIES ALREADY!! YUM

lol, not my own strawberries but from Florida and they actually SMELLED like strawberries so I caved in and bought 3 boxes, told the grands there was strawberry shortcake for dessert tonight.... they looked at me odd, asked if they 'd never had it and said no.....so of course I made up a square and we shared it before chores.....their eyes bugged out when they tasted it....and were VERY ready to get chores done to be ready for early supper....YEAH!! Now hope DD and hubby get done moving wrapped round bales by the time they have chores done, lol, or they may not get any! We had a nice lively heifer calf today....from a second calf heifer that lost hers last year so baby was doing the chase momma in circles thing till momma finally stood still for her, they have the nursing thing down now.

all the new babies! i love it :-)
i'm actually happy that at my place it's custom hatching right now, and they hatch, get through the first night and go to their new homes....ducklings are out tonight, and then the rest hatch by tuesday next week, and then done. sad to see them go, but less work when they are finally in their new homes. thoroughly enjoying it.

off to physio today to hopefully get ready for surgery.....core strength....not sure how to do that at the current moment but i'm sure the physiotherapists will have some idea. i hope! then back on the list for more facet injections, another CT coming up....hopefully they can fix it so doing my part with core strengthening and trying to bike at least an hour 4-5 times a week to get aerobic capacity up. anyways, you guys don't need the depressing news....

next hatch for me is muscovies coming up, and some easter eggers and cornish....then the wyoming sale in 10 days or so! yay! looking forward to that. i'll have lots of turkey poults there, and some chicks hopefully, and maybe some older young turkeys too. :-)
hope everyone has a wonderful day!!!!

Good Morning!

Good day!! Yesterday WAS a crappy day. I forgot to mention that Gary left the gate open, to get round bales out of the shed.... with a good pile of oats for everyone, and its worked up until this time. I came out of the barn, and saw the tractor with bales in the yard. No one on the tractor. Gate open. No Gary. His gloves ON the gate. Looked, no horses. I knew they would be out in the front hayfield. We used to have a little pasture out there. Sure enough, hes out there, with a string on one, and trying to lead her back. As if TWO are going to leave the fresh grass, when one is leaving. So, I go out, and get Rusty. Usually when you go any where near them with a halter, or rope, off they go. He was good. Course, Honey, the Belgian had to gallop insanely fast/stupid all around the other two. And, really giving er on the lawn. So, yay. I get to bounce over horse holes, once again.

Every single year.

Then, much later, I am cutting grass around the horse pasture, and see young stockers IN with the cows.. and some coming out of the barnyard. So I frantically call Gary. I can see him near the shed, as hes walking towards it, no doubt to answer the phone... and I yell that hes to go see why theres fat cattle coming out here. Wellllll apparently he left the gate dividing the cows from the fats open (he has to open it every morning to feed the cows silage/hay), with the excitement of letting the horses out.

So, of course, I get wound up AGAIN.

AND again this morning, when I go look out at the cows, and one of the yearlings is happily sucking a fresh cow. Most likely MOM from last year. So, had to voice that little detail, and had to add... never do that again.

Yes, I am perfect.

Just so you all know. Tee hee. Well, pretty much perfect.

So, we rounded them up this morning, and theres a new calf. There wasn't one when Gary went out, but there WAS. So, need to tag it and stuff. I gave another calf ANOTHER shot of selenium, because she was perfect a few days ago, but knuckling over on the knees. I do know that selenium I used on the first 17 calves was expired. "Its still good", the boss told me. (I went out and bought a new bottle a couple days ago, and have been using that). But then I had to tell him we had to catch this calf, incase its got a case of white muscle going on. I ended up telling him I got a new bottle, and I eventually did the calf myself.

Another is going to calve shortly. Shes huge in the belly too. I will keep a close eye on her, incase she has two. Well, my 'order' is all screwed up... went to the barn first, THEN had my coffee after that, instead of right after bus.

See what kind of bull poop happens today.
