Good Morning!

Post by windwalkingwolf » Wed May 04, 2016 1:27 am

Good morning all!
Got my census today, stuck in between storm door and interior door. Long form one, it's a bloody book! Thick as my pinky! Asks all sorts of personal questions, blargh. I have no idea if my tenant got one or not, I'm dreading asking...he's an idiot. We inherited him when we took over the place. He does things like sends our mail back marked "address unknown" (we share the roadside mailbox) because our names were written in cursive and he couldn't recognize them. Or comes in MY house to let MY dogs outside because they are barking. Or lets my dogs IN because they are barking. He's been told multiple times that they have a job to do, There's almost ALWAYS someone here and if they're out, or in, there's a reason for it, and don't f**k with them. Well, a few days ago we all had to go to town so I brought the dogs in. I didn't lock the door, silly me. When I got home, dogs were outside, in the road. Why? He could hear one scratching on the door. I lost it and served him 2 months notice. So if I can't convince my mum to come live in the granny flat, I'll be looking for a new tenant, available July 1. I'm going out of my way to avoid the man because I'm still grumpy with him LOL, but I'm not sure he's smart enough to notify gov't if he didn't get his own census form, and I'm sure as hell not listing him on mine. On to brighter news...
latest hatch was 12/19, not bad but not great. All looked good at lockdown, first baby started hatch on time (May 1) but a couple were still hatching out today. I opened inc to scoop out thirsty chicks and candle remaining eggs, and there's an indescribably bad smell. One egg is still good, but the rest died sometime during lockdown, including a couple internal pips, and a couple had brown smelly liquid in them. Two chicks hatched wet, one died and one was so goopy it stuck to the shelf paper and now has to relearn to walk correctly. So, now I know not to add water for next hatch, unless we get a drought lol. I added water at lockdown because it's been so dry in here, and then of course the weather turned. At any rate, I'm giving the remaining egg until tomorrow afternoon to start hatching, then I'm pitching it and cleaning incubator for another round. And, boy does it need cleaning, OMG, the last batches weren't nearly so gross. The next round will be 40 eggs of various breeds and mixes, and today I thoroughly washed some of the eggs with warm water to see if it negatively affects development or hatching. Some of the eggs were muddy anyway. SO, if the washed eggs don't work out, at least I'll know not to do it in future.
Mama turkey is still sitting on 12 eggs, I forget when they're due to hatch (I think in about 5 days?) but I'm not checking the eggs to refresh my memory! She's stuck tight, and quite adamant that I not muck with her! One broody hen hatched 6 chicks yesterday, and another broody should be hatching today or tomorrow, there's 5 eggs under her. I might sneak the chicks I just artificially hatched under the two of them tonight. Another little girl was given 3 turkey eggs a while ago to cuddle, I forget when they're due as well, and I don't want to muck with her, mostly because she's in a difficult spot to access. AND, another hen just went down for the count, on a fake goose egg. I'll pick out some proper eggs for her tonight. A muscovy hen also managed to sneak eggs by me (I wasn't going to hatch muscovy this year) and I'll leave her to it since I'm unsure how long she's been there.
The two sows are going to pop some piglets very, very soon--both have bagged up about a week ago and are vajiggly ;) Baby goats are growing like weeds, and take great pleasure in hopping the snake rail fence, eating cardboard, and generally causing mischief. Young calves also growing like weeds, the oldest one is almost 6 months old, and already weighs about 400 lbs. Not sure if that's good or not, I've no experience to compare it to LOL, but to me, he's huge :) He's also a big sucky baby, very very easy to handle, and moooooos for chin scratches. He's never butted me, or even the other calves that I've ever seen. I hope he carries his pleasant personality over to bullhood, though it might be a moot point since I can't seem to find any suitable heifers within my price range! BTW, if you are thinking of maybe one day getting a cow, and you think chickens make a mess, DON'T get a cow. They're pretty disgusting right out of the gate. 50 chickens take 3 months to produce the amount of poop produced by one cow in a day. And, they pee their own weight in one go. Absolutely nothing scientific about either of those statements, it's just what it seems like to me LOL, especially when I'm peeling another ten pound turd off the bottom of my boot, or saying things like "DON'T CHEW THAT, YOU JUST SHAT ON IT YOU DISGUSTING CREATURE!!!"

Good Morning,
Finally starting to collect Wyandotte eggs for hatching, am feeling excited/terrified at the same time. ;)
On the washing front Jan, the original Blue Wyandotte Hatching eggs I purchased were dirty and I washed them all,(cool water & air dry) had a 100% hatch, so it didn't make any difference at all.

Good morning all, sitting here at the computer for the first time in quite awhile....listening to the chicks hatching in the hovabator...so far the grands have counted 26 and still more pipped...don't know how they can count them bopping around like they are. I didn't remember when I started them so it was a surprise when the first one started "talking"...turned off the turner immediately but didn't take it out...too many pips in sight and didn't want to disturb....so they are making quite a mess of the turner but what fun to see all the different colors...didn't think the green eggs would hatch but this morning several are pipped so just late bloomers...told the kids we'd get them out tonight, they started hatching on the second...is that too soon to open ? I got 5 out of 7 hatch from the mini brinsea last week and only turned them about 4-5 times the last two weeks of incubation...hardy lil things
well have a calf that needs vaccinations and tags....later all, Hay

Hi there again. You can leave chicks in the incy for quite a while because they will live off the yolk. 24-48hrs is fine. If you want to get them out just try to make it fast. Good luck.

What I found worked really well when I had a "draggy hatch" with imported eggs.....
if you have a spare incubator, set it up for lockdown temp & humidity, and move the unhatched eggs in there.
That gives them another two or three days to hatch, and it's infinitely easier to move eggs then scrambling balls of fluff. :)

figured I'd set up the spare incy, put in small waterer, paper with feed on floor ....grabbed out 27 fluffies...gave them a first drink (before the grands come home to "help") and they are merrily picking and drinking! happy happy me~!!!! opened two eggs around the top that were pipped with a hole the size of my finger, left them pull put their heads, then put them back in incy, will check on them in an hour to see if they are all right....they are from green eggs, and their shells are TOUGH compared to the americaunas and the flower hens. Still a dozen eggs with no activity....I would be well satisfied with this hatch but will give them another day anyway. Thanks for all the great suggestions!

Glad to see you back Hay. Hope things are settling down, as you will all have a huge adjustment. Good luck on your babies! How many more did you end up with?

We had to bring a cow inside to treat for mastitis. Her mom was a holstein x limo.... and shes got a black angus dad. Shes 5 years old, and has a fairly big udder. We have never had our hands on this cow (although her mom was a bottle baby originally), but she looks just like her mom... same eye/face. Quiet too... but I was wondering if I would get my hand/head/arms kicked off trying to syringe stuff up her quarter. I couldn't believe how calm she was!! Quiet as all get out. I would SWEAR its her mom incarnate! She was NO problem stuffing 2 huge aspirins down her throat twice a day for 3 days either. Granted she didn't like it, but some cattle in the headgate will practically try and lift the thing, and thrash around, even getting down on their knees....

I love her. Anyhow, treated her for the last time in the back quarter (did this after the calf sucked), and thought we would keep her in for the night. Her idiot calf decided it wasn't done nursing, and actually sucked on that treated quarter. Ugh! Then did the head shake, like "What the heck"? lol. Hopefully she didn't suck all of it out. I massaged it in for about 5 minutes. Regardless, even tho she may lose that quarter... shes feeling much much better!! If all the cows behaved like this one, I wouldn't mind the work so much. I've been saying for the last 3 years, that the cows should go.

Well, after a day of digging out stupid huge thistles, my neck and shoulders are sore today. And, getting up out of my bus seat and trying to walk was torture, lol. Course. Think I will go and dig in some glad bulbs today. Hopefully by the time they make it up, there will be no more frost. My tulip magnolia tree I see will only have one or two flowers. The buds got frosted, with the last severe late frost. Every single time I buy something, its a bust.

I bought a forsythia... and the thing is HUGE now. Even the year after I planted it, one or two blooms. Now? 3 years later? About 2 blooms. My eastern red bud died last spring, in its third year after planting. When I planted it, it was only about 4 feet tall. It did wonderfully for two years, but too young for blooms. I kept it watered, and it was so healthy looking. A landscaper friend tried to tell me fungus and some rot killed it, not the two severe winters in a row. The thing wasn't even old enough to have struggled with those problems, it was beauty. My willow bush thing, that looks a pretty pink on the ends, just looks like a weed... and now 3 years later, no tulips flowers. Gah.

Well, I guess I will go outside. I fired up the hovabator.. I had to turn on the furnace, and set the lid on it, to warm it. Such a pain in the butt. See how many actually hatch this time.

Hi everyone
Welcome back hay!!!
Hope things have settled down.

Love the new babies...i have a pile in the basement to go out to the barn once i can move them

Got the phone call yesterday to be at lhsc at 11 this morning for injections. So...went. experienced. Am home now. Not the most pleasant but now that its all frozen inside it isnt feeling too bad. I was warned to take it easy because the freezing comes out in about 8 hours...by another patient on her 7th set of injections....so i am going to pretend its the 4rth and throw a movie (star wars-may the 4rth be with you) into the dvd player and make a pot of tea and flake out. This patient also tols me to take tomorrow off work. So...just nice to finally get in there....back to the surgeon next friday and by then we will know if i need surgery or just injections.

Our swallows are back en force! Picking flies off the side of the house. Its nice. Have to clean out the hatcher. 7 RIRs from Al. All absolutely beautiful. Shame the fuzzies grow up so fast, but good too that they grow up so fast.

Hope everyone has a great day.

SO I went up to collect eggs and heard Lucky come in behind me. Since it's spring he's been a bit uppity so I turned around waaaay too fast. All I heard were popping noises from either side of my knee joint and excruciating pain. Didn't pass out because I didn't want to be eaten! X-rays OK so now Dr. talking about an MRI in the distant? future. Not what I needed right now. I now really feel OCs frustration!
