Good Morning!

Post by Bayvistafarm » Tue May 03, 2016 8:54 am

Good morning!! When I pulled in with my bus, I could see Gary separating a heifer and a calf. I could see when I went out earlier, that she was in the process of calving. But, after she had it, she decided her stomach was more important, so she headed with the throng to the silage. Baby went too, and got trampeeded in amongst everyone. So... now they are both inside, and shes letting it suck!!

Course, last night at cow check, the first calf born was happily sucking her. Hopefully it didn't take all her colostrum. I scared it off. Sometimes heifers are so dim.

Anyhow, this heifer was bred to the unit bull... a nice red angus, so at least its something not out of its grandfather. Even tho we are getting a new bull for the summer, this makes 4 I will keep so far. The first three (out of real good milking moms), and this baby. Course, if the heifers bred Charolais calve out heifers, we will keep them too. Theres one white cow mostly charolais, and we bred her back to one also.

I really need to cut grass today, after it dries abit. There is always lots of that to do. I've already cut it once, behind the shed/daves house/Jeannies house and back the lane around the cow pasture, so naturally its super long now. Longer than the lawn and lane grass I still don't need to cut.

I guess I had the greenhouse heater on too hot last night, I got up this morning and the roof vent was open. Big hydro bill coming up. Its been on for two weeks. At first, nights. The last few cold rainy days... days too, on low.

Had a scare this morning, I thought the village kook was walking back our lane, when I was heading out with the bus. Turns out it was Marv.... (hes like a son to us.. lives at the end of our village), walking in for a coffee with Gary before he had to leave for work. Hes 40 and just quit smoking. Granted for the second time, but this time hes confident he will keep quit. My son however.... is not so committed. If he says hes quit... he will be a sneaking quitter. I don't know why people just can't quit that horrid habit, its so BAD for you. But, never smoked, so I have NO idea the cravings one experiences.

Oh, and that census stuff is garbage. I got the long form too... and I tried to do the Ag one online, but I couldn't get on. Seems everyone in the world was probably crashing the site. Seriously, stupid questions on there, like... anyone have trouble seeing without glasses, contacts, stuff like that. I don't know, can't remember the exact question, but really?? If you could see perfectly fine, would you still require glasses?? And, whose business is that anyhow. Are they trying to see if the chemical they have put somewhere... food/air...water.... working, making people blind? lol.

Anyhow, I guess I'd better go get something done.

WLLady wrote:QR_BBPOST yeah, my big question is.....if the horses are pets, and i don't claim any of their expenses, are they technically livestock? I guess they are, but then i "pasture" them on my private land, on the 2 acres of lawn that is taxed at residential rate...so....that is NOT included in my farmland - income generating land....so....do i put in 2 acres of pasture? which it isn't...or just pretend i have no pasture (which i dont, not on my farmland anyways)....?? LOL
i don't know. i'll do my best that's all i can say-and all i can do.

Do you want to go to jail by answering incorrectly?? lol. With the jobs section on the household one.... I have Gary as the Ag person... but then I listed myself as working for a paid job, AND farming, so that goes against the farming income tax statement, that lists just him as the farmer. Ya, its just so black and white the answers... NOT. I could always plead that my name is on the deed, and I do work on the farm (no wage), and make some decisions... they want to know who the decision maker is, as if there is only ONE person who can run the farm on his/her own.

BVF I have had Haskap for four years. They do flower early but I always get loads of berries off them. Even the male pollinator gives me quit a bit, I'm very happy with them. I hope you enjoy them. My turkeys are finally laying, the quail aren't yet. I'm not sure why my birds are so slow this year, but fertility and hatch rates have been great with the chickens, so here's hoping it carries through to the rest of my birds.

LOL BVF. They are asking for "operators" not "owners". at least that's how i read it. so i am the owner, while my hubby and i are operators, because well, it's too much for just 1 person....
Nah, i don't WANT to go to jail, but i would have a ton of free time, i could actually maybe sleep instead of working 2 jobs full time (farm and work) and maybe write the book i want to write and further my education, all on taxpayers $$! lol okay, i'm kidding. i did list the horses, but i buy hay, so that will suffice. and my lawn is classed residential, it will go on the personal census. along with all our personal equipment that is NOT on the farm books and all my husbands jobs (3) and all that. of course, they don't give room to list 3 jobs, only 2....of course. so i'll have to phone in to do that form anyways.
i guess i'll have to do a count in the barn, best i can for the chickens and turkeys. there's no spot for "heritage" or "conservation" breeding....hm....ah well. and well, they can always call me for clarification if they need to. after all, they have my address and phone number! but if they come to the door i might put them to work while we talk. ;-P

This was on the personal one.. or the 'household' one. As soon as I listed Gary as my spouse.... then I got a few Ag Questions. I haven't even tackled the REAL agricultural one. They already KNOW hes the farmer, has a farm, works on the farm, because those questions came up. I imagine not everyone gets Ag questions on their household one. Thus the job section. Do you have any paid jobs other than your farm, blah blah. If they already know all about us... then wth?

So, i got all pissed off because it asks for income and expenses, and i need my tax form to get those.....well, i get the tax form and type it in and then they stop asking about it. but i'm all set now, i have my tax form, i can answer ANYTHING! LOL. then all of a sudden the form ended...um....wow. that wasn't half as bad as i thought it would be. annoying that they need to know, but the online form was way less painful than i remember the paper forms (or the telephone form i did the last time with a person on the phone) being.....hm. maybe i'm doing too much paperwork at my workplace and am getting numb to it or something. oh well. agriculture one is done. i still haven't received my personal one yet....
i'm sure that will come tomorrow. it better....those ones are longer i'm sure. although, don't they hand deliver the person ones? at least they used to, i did that one year, working as a census representative. talk about a thankless job....so i don't give them a hard time when they come to the door, because i was a starving student trying to pay my way through school when i did the job. and man did i ever get it from some people. and it sure wasn't nice...i was just trying to earn a paycheque.

well, today is over, ripping headache....sigh. was supposed to take the day off after the conference but went in to work to try to get things done because i have to be home tomorrow for various vets/farriers/etc etc. should have stayed home and slept. ah well. time for chores and then record the hatched eggs, and get in touch with the folks that ordered these ones. hopefully get them to their new homes shortly.

Al, looks like i have a few striped RIRs? Do you have a few e+ based RIR in with your wheatens? (just curious). i only hatched 1 out of 2 welsummers and had 5 striped chicks in that hatch, so something is carrying e+ somewhere...i have some solid chicks too, so there's some wheaten based in there too....they're good looking chicks, beautiful colour on them already in the fuzz. can't wait to do the crosses and see what they give me!!!! so, 20 weeks to laying (5 months) and then another little while to get used to breeding and laying bigger eggs, so i'll be looking at 6 months or so before hatching the crosses....whoohoo winter babies coming up! LOL
