Babies. This little dove is in a nest in my honeysuckle hedge.

These are baby blackbirds. The nest is on a pile of pine branches that are laying on the ground.

I have a barn swallow nesting right outside the door on the porch light. The male perches on top of the umbrella and sings his heart out. I am so pleased, mosquito catchers. And hopefully now they will come back year after year. I am going to make a couple of little shelf kind of things to put on the house to encourage the younguns to stay.

Barn swallows are territorial and dont like a second pair close by. That is as long as they can see them. I have seen them nest on opposite sides of a beam in the barn and have no problem. But put them 50 feet apart where they can see the other, and it is war.

Lots of people dont like these guys because they build mud nests on the side of houses under the eves, and they knock them down for cosmetic aesthetic reasons, (the fools) then complain about the mosquitoes.

I just grabbed these pics off the net for illustration purposes. The one built on the L shaped shelf is a great easy encouragement for them to nest. I will put up several before next spring.

Wonderful birds are swallows.

The nest our guys were building came down in the wind and they haven't returned. Will try the shelf. We also sometims get Cliff Swallows but haven't seen them this year.

I think barn swallows are beautiful.
Our poor bluebird is gone :(
He was nothing but a pile of blue and orange feathers in the road one morning and I haven't seen the female since. I'm not sure if a car or maybe a hawk got him. No body.

I love barn swallows. When I worked. before the pandemic, they would nest just out side the doors to the studio. Every day i would watch them until and after they hatched. Loved watching them fly.

Everybody took the babies out today, crows had 4 in the driveway, looked like "home schooling to me ;)
and unless I am mistaken mama bluebird took the babies out to have a bath, there were at least 3 in there, but hard to tell, there was so much splashing, I was laughing so hard it was difficult to take a good picture, it looked exactly like little kids in a kiddie pool..

Bad me but I just saw this thread (I think)...everyday is bird day in my world and I'm not just talking chickens, although that's not such a bad thing...we have noticed some new varieties not usual to this area this year ..the Indigo Bunting for one..that was a real treat...Bohemian Waxwings came thru in a small flock a while back...never ever saw those before...beautiful birds....and Swallows are gaining in numbers which is such a treat for me...when i was a kid, Barn Swallows were in abundance..every farm had hundreds yet not so many at all these days...can only assume chemicals and loss of decent nesting locations...I have considered that a barn needs to be occupied for the swallows to hang around...and we al know what's happened to all the old barns...a shame really..anyway...we have our little Wren couple back, using the wee birdhouse i put up just for such an occupant...they have the loudest chirping song for such a tiny bird ...a real pleasure to watch them whilst sitting out with a beverage...aka a cold one....life is good... :type: :run:
