This question has been bugging me for a while now: On those Aliens.... With all the phones hanging out everywhere capable to take pictures and movies at a seconds notice, where are all the UFOs
UFO's everywhere, but since everybody has got their nose buried in their iPhone, nobody notices them.
The only way you will ever see another UFO picture, is if it photo bombs somebody "selfie" ;)

OK so I went out to the coops this am. Opened one and there are feathers everywhere. My little silver partridge green egg layer thinks it's a GREAT time to throw a moult, WTH!
I am really pleased I have those flat panel heaters in the coops on a thermostat just to take the edge off. Felt a few birds and they're in nice condition so far, hope I don't lose any of my old girls in this.

I have the same situation in my coop @Killerbunny : my old girl Twyla is in a major moult, so I too am grateful that I have a 400 watt flat panel heater to take the edge off. I highly recommend them. I think my two youngsters and two middle-aged hens will be alright, but I worry about my two old girl in this cold. To add insult to these extreme temperatures, the feed store where I buy my flax bedding from is out of it again, and isn't likely to get more until February/March, if then. Thanks to Rona now being Lowe's, because apparently Rona sold them flax bedding by the skid, whereas Lowe's won't sell less than a truckload. :-\

I've had a couple die already, I won't put a heater in the barn, just too big and I'm afraid of a fire with all the hay. Have 2 chickens in the bathroom and 3 in the basement that weren't handling the cold well. Leghorns and silkies.

My favourite Giant hen is in my house right now. I noticed her trying to cosy up to a turkey at a feeder, which is VERY uncharacteristic for her (turkeys and even other breeds of chickens are beneath Her Royal Majesty) and noticed she was molting, even though she blew feathers in late August. Turns out she had broken a toe. Apart from her, I've got a couple in soft molt and showing signs of stress. A young duck and a young pullet had frost burn blisters in between toes. Lost two meat chickens and one more doesn't look so hot. It's only the beginning of January, but the birds and I are already longing for Spring. Nugget the gosling has never had a cold day in his life, but he says he's over this bitter cold nonsense, too. It was a balmy -13 earlier, and then BAM, the temperature fell again. :barf:

Hope you are safely inside Ross best of luck digging out. Temperature dropping like crazy here, birds not impressed but most seem okay so far, a bit of frostbite on a few rooster combs, hopefully everyone makes it through the next few days then a couple warmer days coming. I think I will have to look at running some power out to my birds for next winter just so I have the option of a bit of heat and heated waterers. Carrying water out twice a day is getting old real fast.
