Post by ross » Tue Oct 11, 2016 7:27 pm

Years ago out in Alberta when oil prices went up & Ontario thought they should get it cheaper . The Premier at the time said "let those eastern bxxxtards freeze in the dark " . Well looks like now we have our own Premier telling us that . Go figure . Gonna be a lot a old , cold dead folks this winter . Luck

In the UK just before we left heating of any type was expensive. Old folks were told to move into one room, wrap themselves in warm clothes and a blanket and just use a space heater for that room only. a lot of frail seniors did in fact die. Appalling.

Look up your last electricity bill. Divide total $ by kWh consumption.
In our case it's around 0.25$/kWh (including delivery and other stuff, not taxes).

Of course if you're comparing your summer usage with a possible usage for heating that would probably be used during the day when rates are higher it would probably be more a expensive $/kWh rate. Plus, it's not as if you can stockpile heat at night when the rates are lowest!

We're trying to figure this out as this new rental house has propane downstairs but electric baseboard heater upstairs, good windows upstairs and poor ones down and not much of an idea of the previous cost except our monthly payment for propane is $150/mo. Dreading our winter hydro bills! Trying to winterize things to see if we can keep it reasonable.

The cheapest thing to do to winterize is to put a plastic film over windows.

Cheap daytime heat is a solar pop can heater. You can buy one $3000 or make one for $200. Lots of plans online.

Why not install new woodstove and chimney yourself? It will still have to be wett certified, but will cost boatloads less and you can have it done next week instead of December.
