Good Morning!

Post by SandyM » Mon Feb 29, 2016 8:57 am

It's hard to capture the intense beauty of the church my cell phone camera. It really was quite stunning as most are. So much detail. The ceiling was astounding. We took a slew of pictures.

The acoustics for the singing was darn impressive as well. Was a great day. Need those to recharge my soul occasionally :)

Cheers

I am so not a coleslaw fan....any coleslaw...LOL that dinner looks amazing. Old churches are amazing. I love the stained glass....maybe my next hobby. ha ha.

well good morning everyone. February 29!!! doesn't happen all that often! looks like winter wants another kick at the can tomorrow-or so they are saying. blech. no wonder everyone is sick. i've already heard from 2 people in my lab that won't be in, and i have the laryngitis thing now...oh yay! i feel perfectly fine, but just scratchy voice and throat. hopefully it will be short lived.

yesterday was soooo nice! windy at my place, but wonderfully warm. the weather station martin has said 13, but i was working without a coat. fixed my greenhouse. the wind is so rough here that i can't have a window in the roof. even if i secure it, the wind rips the lexan out. so in the past 3 years i have had to replace the window twice, and when the second window got trashed i strapped it down, then the wind ripped out the lexan AND broke the frame, so i emailed the company (rion) and they sent me to another company here in canada (canada greenhouses) who doesn't carry just parts, who were amazing, they emailed the company that supplies the parts (footprint products), and that company emailed me, sent me the catalogue, and i told them which lexan sheet i needed. 2 days later canpar dropped off the package. they didn't even bill me for the part or the shipping! sooo nice! so this weekend i managed to get the window out, and then get this new piece of lexan in...so now hopefully the greenhouse will not blow apart anymore. i can't wait to get in there with some seedlings! but -14 at night later this week???? geez. not yet. got it pretty much all cleaned up, just need to sweep it out now, lots of weed seeds on the floor, and then i can start with the seed planting. yay!

have 2 turkey poults in intensive care in the incubator back in the house with food and water. gave them electrolytes and booster and some sugar water, but i don't think they're going to make it. and lost the weakest one last night, i'm not surprised, it was having a lot of difficulty hatching, lots of blood when it struggled out finally and it wasn't as busy as the others. oh well. i sure don't want weak birds.....but still sucks. there are 5 still bouncing around the brooder. i've shown them water and food at least 15 times and at least 3 of them were eating and drinking last night. fingers crossed i don't mess something up and they all die now that they finally hatched! it's amazing how the little ones make all the same calls (except gobbling) that the adults do! hm...now to figure out girls from boys...

Hope everyone has a great day! maybe if we all think warm spring thoughts this storm coming will dissolve into nothingness.....

congrats on your hatch Kathy! i always wonder if thoses weaker poults are the results of Parthenogenesis, and the same with toms that have trouble fertilizing eggs... I know you know all about it... poults/chicks developing from unfertilized eggs... in this article here it says the dark cornish carries the gene for it.... could easily be whats going on with them. any way you could run some genetic tests in your lab? lol!

Very windy here too. We have some things that broke and a lot of small branches all over the place. I tried to let the silkies free range yesterday but when they looked like tumbleweed blowing across Kansas's farm land I put them away despite their protest.

That's sad and likely frustrating losing them after hatch. Does survival rate decrease when an incubator is used? Like will my Silkie chicks die after born as well (hatched and raised by mom)? Eeek!

Ok, off to post about my poop eater in the health section

don't worry about your silkies sandy...moms know best! they really do. and i've had moms that have kicked eggs out from the nest, i have candled, put in the incubator and they hatched just to die. somehow mom knew that egg wasn't good. i think turkeys (and cornish) are simply a PITA. LOL
i was hoping my royal girl was broody...she's been sitting 3 days now. and this morning she's up on the roost talking away...and the eggs are stone cold. oh well. guess not. LOL. i still have a WAY better hatch than last year. last year i must have set over 50 turkey eggs. i got 2 poults. this hatch i set 10, 1 didn't go at day 14, candling was clear, 1 arrested and 8 hatched. even if i lose the 2 weak ones, and the 1 that died last night, that's still 5....from one hatch. i guess decreasing that 1C made a HUGE difference. I'm going to try that with the next batch of cornish that i put in. maybe it will work better for them.

Sunny and bright here, must have been freezing rain overnight, cars are evenly coated in ice.
Welcoming committee at the window, a hint the feeders need toping up...

Whew: the car was acting up: check engine light lit up last week; funny noise happened on thurs, it sounded like a rock in the alternator: hand brakes froze on during deep freeze -25, then again two days later. We were not impressed, had to borrow my mom's car until a warmer day happened.
So the vw's on the hoist: nothing wrong with it. I was prepared for "it'll be $1000" but not today... Woohoo!

Home safe from my weekend away but man leave it up to me to drive home in the crazy snow storm that was Collingwood to Barrie! I took the 407 for the first time, I don't care how much it costs I would gladly pay double for that stress free driving experience through TO.

Good morning everyone!
Looks like on top of having that awful cold i now have strep throat awesome. Off to the gp today. I am a little tired of all this sick stuff happening at work!!! Good news is after 3 hours of babysitting, bringing poults into the incubator again and diligently hand feeding and watering all 7 surviving poults are eating, drinking and running around...even the two in intensive care yesterday....geez. these are too much work. I must hatch on friday next time so i have all weekend to baby them along....
Off to the brooder later today probably. Hope everyone has a great day!!
