BTW, Lou & Josh eat the chicken @ swiss chalet (white rocks/frankens) and for the last year or so he's been complaining about the meat being dry, stringy and tougher, not 'like it used to be'. We are very limited where we can eat with JT's allergies so when those guys work late that's where they end up. When I said to him about the 'woody' article he said YES, that's what it is, woody.

I saw some at the auction last week and it put me off buying and raising them. I can't fix genetics and I sure as heck couldn't eat something from my backyard that looks like that. Regardless of the 'suppose too' factor. I can't unsee what I saw.
Yes that's were the name came from Sandy.

Those meat birds you saw at the auction were just feathering out, and yes they do have a certain funky smell to them. I used to raise my own and they had a free range area outside so they got grass and bugs along with their feed, before I raised them in the barn and they smelled bad and couldn't wait until process day. I also find they are so food motivated it's hard to get into the pen with them to feed them without being stampeded and stepping on them. I never lit them 24/7 so therefore they didn't have full time access to feed so they took longer to finish out at around 12 weeks.

Funny, I rarely eat cornish x because I find them too mushy and greasy. I LIKE some texture to my food, but I would draw the line at woody! YUCK

I think for my 'chosen' meat bird this year I will be ordering barred rocks if I can't enough Ameraucana's in the freezer.
