I too thought they were ridiculously expensive. And really wanted to DIY one up from old kitchen drawer tracks, and such. And really wanted to get one in Canada. But in the end (with a baby arriving this past May I could not fuss with the coop any more ; - ), I just paid up.
AND not wanting to inflate the GDP in trump's america, I bought a british one, Omlet, and found a Canadian distributor, fourlegsorwings.com. It takes 4 AA batteries (I use rechargable and they've lasted since spring so far), also it can do timer mode or light sensor mode. I have been similarly happy to everyone above.
