We used to her the vixens calling in the UK in February mating season, absolutely awful. The Bobcat we're familiar with here, oh sorry the "not a bobcat"!

Oops, I forgot. MNR says we don't have bobcats, so it must be true! roflmbo
Maybe it's an imported hybrid housecat

sounds like our area - police had a warning in the paper last fall : warning about Cougars - people saw it and livestock got killed and dragged up into the trees. Ministry say no - coyotes or maybe bobcat
I did not know that coyotes take their kill up into trees or that a bobcat can drag a grown up ram up there and maybe it's a new version of bobcats with long tails?

Don't pay attention to a government official sitting in an office downtown somewhere, I mean I am sure they are telling the truth when they say there are no wild animals near the water cooler or in the cafeteria where they get their morning croissant but it's different for us.

We have always had bobcats, I am an hour north of Ottawa so it wouldn't take much for one to travel to surroundings areas. Especially now since most people don't hunt anymore they would be less harassed. They say a bobcat is mostly a giant cat, so I don't think it would be powerful enough to pull a sheep up into a tree. A bear could but I have never heard of a bear doing that, usually they cover their kill with dirt a leaves. My friend had two full grown cows killed, they were clawed to death and yet people tried to tell him it was wolves. I guess they had a toothache that day. Plus usually wolves go for the calves, this thing was ambushing full grown beef cows.

Another warning, foxes also make those cries when they get rabies.

Don't worry about the "not a bobcat" same thing for me as the smarty pants government workers say I have a "not an eastern Sasquatch" will they never learn???

the gov't people don't want to admit to cougars or other animals as they would then have to start a program to monitor them: this when their budgets are slashed. in the last 20 years gov't owned tree nurseries have been shutdown and the Ferguson Forest Centre in Kemptville now has to make their own seed collection/storage program as the MNR Tree Seed Facility in Angus is shutting down this year.

forward thinking or what?

More like shortsighted and myopic, I'd say.

Bert, I had heard that about the seed facility...it's sad...the government has slasjhed all sorts of programs at every level but it seems more people are working for the gov't than ever...just what are all these people doing?...i digress....it will take some time for The Howard Ferguson facility in Kemptville to get that going so in the meantime what?...on another note, some years ago MJs dad told me that the Big Rideau Lake here had its own indigenous strain of lake trout...popular fish...yet the numbers were diminishing from, you guessed it, over fishing and back some time ago the permit to gill net virtually all the whitefish out of the lake...and that was a food fish for the trout...anyway, stocking program took effect for trout but the stock of fingerlings was derived from fish taken out of Lake Superior...those fish spawn at much deeper depths than available in the Rideau so no spawning ever took place and constant restocking was required...is it only me?..am i missing something?..wouldn't it be the thing to do to use the indigenous strain for that purpose?... Anyway...just cuz you work for the gummint doesnt mean you know much..and if you expect business to step in and solve the issues you must be smoking glue...and thats what has been happening....I always thought that government was there to make sure those things that need doing that the business world cant see a profit in are done...ok...rant over...gonna go boil sap and make syrup..much more fun.. :running-chicken:

Yes, most ... but I am a contract worker, and have worked in various government departments over the years, and like in any industry, there are good and there are bad. I have experienced examples of both. For every government employee who is doing the best job that they can, there is another who is milking the system for all it's worth.
