Re: Chicken as big as a turkey.
I'd seen a picture in a book (from the 1920's or so) of a black Jersey Giant rooster pulling a wagon with a two year old kid in it at a parade.

LOL @baronrenfrew , I'm pretty sure that was one of those pictures created with the old school "photoshopping" method (cut out from one photo place on another photo, take a photo of that)

Re: Chicken as big as a turkey.
There ARE 17 lb. Jersey Giant roosters, I've seen them. It takes VERY selective breeding, and two years worth of growth and maturation though.
Meat chickens have the potential to get that heavy, but must have their diets carefully controlled so that they grow REALLY slowly, otherwise their hearts give out sooner rather than later. They are missing the switch in their heads that signals when they are full, and even on pasture will eventually eat themselves to death. With Cornish/Rocks, it's just a matter of time in any case, no matter how careful you are.
Heritage breeds like Brahma, Giant, and standard Cornish, avoid heart and leg troubles by building up frame before putting on muscle and fat...which takes a lot of time. So while it's possible, it isn't particularly practical.

Re: Chicken as big as a turkey.
I wonder about the other meat breeds they sell, anyone ever try those slower growing types? How big at four months?
Someone needs to try a Jersey Giant crossed with Brahma, maybe throw in Cornish or some Cornish/frankenchicken. I want a twenty pound chicken!
