Re: Just sharing...
I WANT A SAW MILL! but will prolly have to settle for a chainsaw mill. im very jealous man! I scavange antique wood tools n such. I have an old beaver lathe but iv never used it as i dont have the chisels. man are they ever expensive! I guess I could make some on the grinder... I did make a long drill bit yesterday that I was suprised worked so well
I have a few old draw knifes but I need everything else... man we have half of a hundred year old barn on the ground here, all hand chinked but they are sold! Landlord is trying to get a hold of the guy so he can come and get the rest. I hope he says he dosent want them... hahahaha! then I will need a mill!

That's the stuff I use on my bread board too. I got mine at Lee Valley Tools, but I see that HH's price is better.TomK wrote:Al...heres the pic of that finishing product i found at HH...i just use one of those blue mechanics paper towels to rub it in...

Al....just a note...regarding the turning tools....you can grind your own from old files..the grade of steel isn't quite as hard as that used in the bought gouges etc so the tool rest on the lathe should be closer to the turning wood and keep a whet stone handy to keep the edge but man oh man does it save money...

Very nice board!! My son and husband like to play in the woodshop. Have you ever made anything out of the osage orange tree? My son made a small 'container' out of a piece, out of a limb that had fallen. Wow... the pattern... grain? Is it ever nice!!TomK wrote:Al.. I'm a bit of a lumber / exotic woods scavenger and I've got all kinds of stuff here and inherited a bunch from my late father in law as well... I've got cherry and maple and oak... Some birch that I sawed back in the seventies...red cedar...black oak plank that I bought in 1972 to make spindles for a spinning wheel...I used to own a sawmill back in the day...52" blade goon a refurbished McRae portable? mill...incredible unit...wild what they thought ofcas portable in the early part of the 20th century... Anyway...lots of material..should keep me going for a while... The trick is seasoned lumber..none of this kiln dry crap...it'll split sure as anything...then your project and good feelings go down the toilet... Anyway...I'm going to see if there's an interest in specialty boards and custom stuff...keep me at home more where I want to be anyway.... Cheers..
and thank you to all the nice comments from everyone
Nice colour too.
Theres a place in Cambridge, called A & M... wood specialty. Ever head of it? At least he thinks thats what its called. My son bought a piece of purple heart from Brazil... and that wood is nice too. Its a purplely red... hard as anything.
