found a home made (amish) nestbox locally and took out the old and put in the new....they lay BESIDE the new on the floor!! guess that's their way of telling me what I can do with the roll away nest boxes

Haha hayladee..figures doesn't it?...gotta love the 'in your face' attitude some of the birds have...i go out to the coop to chk on things and usually find at least two if not three hens in one box..the one beside completely unused...for fun , ill pick one girl up and move her over to the empty box..lasts about 5 secs and back she goes all fuss and bother squeezing in with the others..quite the funny pushing and shoving match goes on....best entertainment there is...they have figured out that standing on the cover and leaning down forward they can get to the eggs already laid and out of the way so i am putting a 1x2 on edge on the flipup side of the cover to prevent them doing that...should keep them from reaching the eggs...we'll see :running-chicken:

Who knew it would take that kind of effort to outsmart a chicken ?

I have 5 pullets that absolutely refuse to lay in the boxes simply prefer corner of coop, so I broke down and put a laying box in that corner.
They are laying in it, but it means that I have to get inside the coop to get the eggs instead of the convenient access from outside, which they refuse to use. Go figure.

One of my dotte pullets is the same. No matter how hard Chunky tries to show her where to lay she lays out in the middle of the coop!
