Our Convalescing Hen

Here is a picture of our BSL hen that survived the raccoon attack back on July 18th. DH found her not active, as she usually is, a few days later. Amazing she survived. The open wound on her back was pretty gruesome. Some of the healing scab is visible between her wings. We have not reintroduced her to the rest of the flock yet; it's still too early.

Ahh! What a sweetie :). I'm so glad that she survived! She's lucky to be allowed to convalesce in the chard :).

I hope so too. The wound on her back is healing over miraculously well. All we have been doing is spraying it with Vetracyn (spelling?) every other day or so, and keeping her in the box with food and water. It is only recently that DH has been taking her out for some exercise in the fenced in veggie garden. The hen has even had a dust bath one day!

Yesterday, DH looked under a scab. He could lift it a bit, but it's still hanging on. It's definitely healing. I'm thinking - when it's ready to fall off, the hen will help it along with her preening.

Today, the little hen is back with the flock. The biggest and thickest scab has fallen off.
We had let her out to free range, and because she went toward the hen yard a few times, we decided it was time. We reintroduced her to the group when we let all the chickens out of the enclosure. There was only one brief scuffle with a couple of other hens, then all was well. Except when it was time to herd them all back into their yard; the hen went the opposite way. She was a bit hesitant to go back into the enclosed yard, but she did.
