Personal Crap but feedback helpful
My parents split when I was 4, mom had custody until I was 10 years old
Dad got custody & we never saw our mom again...she simply vanished
I found their wedding certificate which showed she was 20 in 1953
BUT I also found a Divorce decree for 1979!!! ( just before my dad remarried )
next year I turn 65, I have this Bucket plan ~ I'm hoping to clear anything negative from my life.
She was born in Kentucky, married in Chicago & ALL I have is her name.
Don't know anything about her life, parents, school or even her birthday.
I went to a "Later Day Saints" SEARCH meeting, & NO one was able to find any leads.
Does Anyone here have any suggestions or experience with searching?
I have posted a pic & brief story on FB, asking for folks to share in hopes someone knew her.
I just joined Instagram & posted a pic & hashtag
The next step is to do a DNA test....any thing else I can do??? ANY Advice???

If you know she was born in Kentucky, and you know the year, search the births, deaths and marriages. When you find her birth info you will have her parents names. Add all the new names to your tree. Keep clicking on the leaf icons that pop up. If you know where she lived at anytime check the census records. The big breakthroughs come when someone else has a tree with one of your family linked to it by marriage. Just add everything you know to your tree.
I sent my DNA off 3 weeks ago, excited to see the results. I've been using Ancestry for 4 years on and off, it's an amazing resource. My tree goes back to 1630.
Good Luck.

My brother is the family historian and found a lot of info through ancestry.com
I think what jonesboy recommended sounds like a great starting place. Sometimes you need to go all the way back to the beginning of the mystery to start unravelling it. Im not much help to you but I do wish you success on this journey and I don't think you sound foolish at all for wanting to fill in some blanks. Also people do odd things when they feel they need to protect their kids either physically or emotionally. Don't let what you found out about parents divorce spoil the memory of your dad. Sounds like a special guy to me to take on 2 girls alone. Best wishes

If you apply for her birth certificate - pay for the long form Not the short form. Long form has much more information on it
If you know her maiden name post that on ancestry to see if you get any hits
Also search for deaths from years you stated until today
I have also searched church records and cemeteries
Good luck

I started the Family Tree. I was surprised how much info was there.
Have a copy of the ships log with my Grandfathers journey from Italy
16 years old with a few brothers, coming to work as Farm hands in Peterborough!!
Found quite a few surprises, but zippo on my mom.
Wrote the registrar for Kentucky, Chicago, cook county Illinois - no match.
I am on 3 search sites so far & will get the others.
Contacted a few Jennings Family Tree, when I thought Could be her - but it wasn't
thejonesboy - how damn exciting!!!!
I saw Ancestry for $79 a month before Xmas - then it jumped to $99 - now it's $129
Trying to wait for a sale again. Toying with 23+me so I can get Health info too.
Can't wait to hear what you find ~ please share!!!!

I see ancestry.ca at $29.99CAD / Month
$21.99CAD / month if you get 6 month membership.

The monthly fee for Ancestry is based on what information you want to access. If you are only starting out you may want to only sign up for a few places, like North America. Once you get more information you can change your package. I did a bit of family research online a few years ago. I noticed there are a lot of spelling mistakes in names, especially on census records, and sometimes people are recorded by a middle name or nickname, not their actual name. Try searching for alternate spellings.

Just a note. All public libraries in Ontario have Ancestry.com. So head down to your local library and get free access. You can use one of the public computers or take in your own device and access the library's free wifi and Ancestry.com. And at a public library you could talk to the Reference Librarian and they will give you some help in your research. Just saying.....libraries are great free resources in every community......ummmm. No guessing what I do for a living LOL
