He would never talk about it either....just glad his wife (my grandma) and the 4 daughters (no sons) got to see him again. I could not imagine either. And i regret now that i was too young when he died to get to know him better.

MJ has (had) 2 uncles on her dad's side that were in the air force during ww2 ...one as a navigator and the other a bomber pilot...both came home damaged and serious drinkers...never talked about it to our level of the family at all...I'm not sure what they shared with their younger brothers...I have (had) two uncles ( my dads older brothers) who enlisted in the German navy just as the war got going...one was a smaller man and he was assigned to a U-Boat and it wasn't until they opened a completely restored U-Boat as a museum in the north of Germany and made a big fanfare about it that he reminisced about his time..and then only from the day to day life aboard one...never anything about action other than the experience of having been found and surviving a depth charge attack in the English channel sitting in the dark silently at maximum depth hoping like hell, the single wall of the sub didnt rupture...the other uncle was on a destroyer class vessel and both men drank heavily coming out of the war and for the rest of their lives...they were sailors, serving their country, right or wrong...its an outlook on conflict that not everyone gets...because usually only the victors celebrate and bemoan losses in a war...the pain of loss is the same on both sides...why we insist on following $%#€¥|@/ politicians in anything is beyond me...because they aren't in it for you or me, just themselves and their own ideology...war is hell on all sides...my soul aches for all those lost and damaged beyond repair

The stories that people want (or need) to hear the most, are the ones that have to be internalized and buried for a person's own sanity.
