Just a heads up, Wyandottes with their lovely skirts of fluff and an irresistible invitation to mites and even if you don't see any, after a day at an auction, it's always safer to treat them with Ivomec or any other cooties treatment of your choice.I know you are an experienced poultry keeper, just a "motherly" reminder. ;)

It's alright OC, your advice is always welcomed. I used that powder some people call sevin. I am disappointed with something, I checked the birds a hundred times before I bought them, everything looked good, no coughing or runny parts. When I took the older pair out of the box, they have that rattled breathing, they will infect the chick for sure. I guess I should have been more aggressive in trying to get some more from the same place. I have a new bottle of vet rx, maybe I will try that. Speaking of mites, the perches in one of the pens that has been empty for a long time, suddenly were infested with mites. I soaked them with mineral oil but they were back in a few days so I used my powder. Not sure how that happened but gross!

it's fall and the mites will be hopping off the mice and wild birds like crazy for nice warmer climes in chicken underfluff. i always end up treating at this time of year, a couple of times....and dusting perches and birds and nesting boxes LOL. once i'm sure i got them off the birds i clean everything out, and start all over with nice clean bedding for the winter. :-)

Ya know what the funniest thing about buying more chickens is? It's that not only do I not feel bad about getting birds back, it's the ones I let go at the sale that are bugging me! Like there were a bunch of bantam hens, marked like light Sussex chickens with a little orange tinge on their backs, pretty girls. They went for $5 for two birds. I was watching them but the sales guys mixed up the boxes between good ones and the ones I didn't want so I was too shy to bid and sort them out. There was a really good quality buff Brahma bantam rooster and if I used him on those girls the chicks would have been so pretty I bet because the Columbian colour would have come out strong and the babies would have been either white Columbian or buff Columbian and I missed out on that experiment. The hens looked like they would be very clever and alert. Should have gotten them. Lol.
