If I'd start over I'd build the house around a "rocket stove". Another great option is a Kimberly wood stove, very efficient and burns maybe 10% of what I burn now for the same heat. USA EPA standards for wood stoves is 7.5gph of wood smoke and this does 3.5. Only a 3 inch pipe is needed for a chimney and is the stove of choice for boats, RV's and small houses as it needs little clearance around it for installation. Killerbunny if I were you I'd take a real look at this.

For heat: you can't beat burning something. Old (and even many new) woodstoves aren't that great. They put out smoke, give heat when burning but can bring in the cold when not running. And the amount of wood (fuel consumption) can be ridiculous. The outdoorwood boilers look great but their wood consumption is obscene. Here's my stove:

We don't have a ready supply of wood and we discovered our insurance rates would go up. Also I don't like the feel of wood type heat. We did look into stoves a while ago but the other issue is incredibly thick concrete walls. SOunds weird but I like the "feel" of baseboead heat.
Ideally moving would be good but the land is great.

I saw a glimpse of your wood cook stove when you posted the photo of the produce you got from Al. I was jealous then, it's worse now that I can see the entire stove. Very nice.

My gas oven is the old kind with a pilot light. I dehydrate veggies and herbs in it. Doesn't cost extra to run and works pretty good.
