My Brooders

Have a novel idea for a piece of equipment? Or a re-purpose of an old piece of equipment?

My Brooder

Post by Poultryprincess » Thu Apr 07, 2016 6:53 pm

Wow ~ I really like the plywood on the front....I never thought of that.
My brooder has 2 front doors, which always worries me.
I always expect a chick to fall out when I'm changing waters & feed.

Do you plan on putting the heater on the mesh door on the top?
Is there a tray or something for the extra water drops?
I've never used the water nipples ( but I bought them already )

Great design Al!!!

My Brooder

Post by thegawd » Thu Apr 07, 2016 7:18 pm

Thanks Colleen and PP!!! Im almost done! the chicks are HATCHING!!!

These are water cups... not the nipples I wouldnt use those in a brooder like this. I had tested the cups all day to make sure they didnt leak. iv been debating on putting something under them to prevent catastrophe but opted not to... but will keep an eye on that for sure.

I have two brooder lamps that hang right inside not far from the chicks at all... i still have to find the other... I have an idea where it is...

i didnt build an auto feeder but one big long one instead all across the front. it will need to be filled everyday which isnt a big deal.

THANKS!

Looks great, Al! Have you used those rough service bulbs in a brooder before? I'm wondering how they would stand up to water splashes, like if a chick takes a drink and shakes its head?

Thanks Jan! well yes I have used these bulbs last year and so far I have not had one burn out or blow up due to water. now I would be interested to see what happens if it was to get water on it as a regular bulb should blow up. hmmmmmm? I may have to set up a test. Globe said these are teflon free, extra thick glass with 5 filaments. I still have every single one I bought. :-)

My Brooder

I'm curious, because I believe water droplets are why actual brooder heating lamps fail/catch things on fire--I had a brooder lamp for one of my nanny goats when she was near kidding time, I was in the barn when she sneezed and it blew up, I have to wonder if hot glass shards on straw or shavings isn't what starts many barn fires. It's one of the reasons I haven't moved this years chicks to the barn yet, I don't trust the lamps!!! My first two small batches of chicks (and two goslings and a poult) don't need heat in the house anymore, but outside would be a different story, and hot water bottles (which is what I used for them when new hatchlings) just won't cut it. I want to know how much punishment those rough service bulbs can take before I risk my babies LOL

My Brooders

Post by thegawd » Sun Apr 17, 2016 6:01 pm

this is the first brooder I ever built when i first got into poultry. I brooded my first batches of quails in it. so i found this box on the side of the road. It was a custom sub box that someone either screwed up or gave up. not sure. thats why its a bit of a weird shape and not square... anyways. I sealed it with varathane, put peal n stick tiles down with silicone, sealed up all the cracks n edges. I used to have a rheostate to control heat from the bulb but i just switch bulbs instead and removed it. it works great.

Today I added an automatic adjustable water system and a feed trough adjustable with screws. this made an awesome brooder just perfect! I usually use this for quail as chicks will just fly right out whenever I open the lid.
