Re: Lets Build a drum plucker
After draining, there's no blood in it to cause bruising, and if there is (for example if the bird has been shot and not hung to drain), the heart is not pumping blood out from broken blood vessels. No blood, no bruise.SandyM wrote:Can I ask a question (probably silly for some).
How does the chicken not get bruised in there?
My plucker guts are the Whizbang kit...I couldn't find a suitable chunk of metal to cut to make a finger plate for the bottom, and didn't want to mess around with finding suitable pulleys and belt lengths and bushings. Feather fingers were included in the kit. I wanted to put it together ONCE and not have to tweak it. The barrel is a blue plastic jobbie, formerly used for olive oil, cut in half. The lumber, switch ( on/off for the motor), 'plumbing, paint and motor were scavenged. I put a rubbermaid tub at the feather chute/outflow, with a screen on it to catch feathers, and a little 12$ fountain pump in it so that the outflow water could be recycled back to the top (I add a bit of bleach). That way I can clean 20 birds or more with a single bucket of water. Handy if not near a hose.
I only have one picture of it saved, I'll have to take some more when I bring it to the new place, hopefully next load so I can get some chickens done. SOOO much easier and faster than hand plucking or skinning. After using it, I'd rather feed them forever than go back to that lol
The only thing I found, was that with larger birds, or if doing more than one at a time, feet tend to get caught in between the plate and the barrel, so I simply cut feet off before tossing them in. They have to come off anyway.

Lets Build a drum plucker
Okay so been working on it here n there n scrounging for parts all over. I dont recommend using a washer. not worth the time n effort but im continuing on with it anyways! LOL.
I wont have a step by step guide to building one either. sorry.
buy the kit n use a drum LOL.
Im almost done, heres where im at. almost certain I wont be able to do a turkey in it but wont know until I try. n if i cant do a turkey I will drop the drum as far down inside the washer as possible and add more barrel to the top. LOL.

Lets Build a drum plucker
im almost DONE! about 95%. I need to get one of those big red emergency shut off weather proof buttons and make a new cover for the controls. I also want to add a water shut off right on that cover as well. BUT as it is it will work! I know it but I still need to drop a bird in it and find out. when I do I will take a video and post it. I also have to stress that making a drum plucker with a washing machine is not worth the effort at all HAHA! Just use a drum! LOL.
