Have a cool plan for a coop? Or new roost designs? Or you simply want to show off your new building.

Best paint for outdoor coop?

Post by nsducktoller » Sun Aug 13, 2017 5:31 pm

My hubby is building a coop for our 6 layer chickens. I don't have any leftover paint to use, and since I am going to have to purchase some anyhow, was wondering what would be best to use.

try and find some "ends" from the paint store-bad mixes that didn't sell.....wrong colours etc. the cheaper the better. LOL. you definitely want to go with an outdoor paint.
i use the linseed oil paint from TSC, for barns, i find it gives good weather protection. and it's not that expensive. but you do need to repaint every 2-3 years.....but i like that the red is matched to the red metal sheeting on my barn. LOL

Is that you Nopper?

Having had to paint various garages/sheds/cold frames over the years, I tend to stick to "stain" rather than paint because paint tended to peel off and needed a scrape before re-painting - what a PITA! I don't know if that is still a problem with the newer paints, but my latest shed was stained before hubby even put the wood up. It saved getting up on a ladder and having stain running down my arm {LOL}.

I agree I like the stain better as I don't have to repaint as much but the paint gives better weather protection.

We used a good quality full colour stain on our board and batten house. Easier to apply than paint and lasts much longer. We have only had to recoat it once in 25 years.
