Nesting Box Curtains

Post by KimChick » Mon Oct 22, 2018 1:15 pm

Since the late morning / afternoon sun shines on the new nesting boxes in the barn enclosure, because there is a window, I decided to make some curtains - even though the opening is to the left of the box, creating some shade from the sun. DH had made these new nesting boxes to accommodate the hens that should start laying around the beginning of December. Otherwise, during the winter, there would only be the three laying boxes in the barn hen house for about 23 hens, 9 of which are not laying as often.

The curtains are made from a worn out bed sheet.

Curtains are installed, even while a hen was in one of the boxes, and 2 curious hens outside.
I overdid the length a bit, only because I pulled the top band snug with no stiffener fused in between the fabric. Oh well.
I loosely knotted a couple of panels at each entrance so the hens could see that they could go in. I hope it works.

Thats awesome! I've been thinking about this very thing for my community box...I think its too wide open for them to use , so curtains would probably make it more attractive as a laying spot. Thanks for the pics!

It looks like some hens are starting to use these curtained nesting boxes; there are 2 using them this morning, which is good to see.
