Trimming is better and lasts longer,once it gets a bit warmer he'll likely be a little more randy and get the job done.

Trimming mature feathers will not bleed. It sounds way scarier than it is...just dont leave sharp pointy ends that could stick the cockerel in the um...well...down there...when he is trying to do his job or you can teach him to be afraid of breeding the hens lol

Omg. Mature verses juvenile feathers? Ok. So they'll have to figure this out in their own. Sounds too lab induced to me. If a girl goes broody again I'll give her EE eggs. I'll keep an eye on the Silkie eggs for fertilization.

Poor girl. She just wasted 24 days and a lot of energy for nothing, thanks to my error. She keeps returning to the box in the coop (but I e been gone most of the day so she's had her way) but when I got home I took her out and turned the nesting boxes to make them unavailable. And they all got sunflower seeds (shells off) and oats. She was pretty happy about that!

I have 7 girls. I'll just let them be and see what happens as the weather warms.

Cutting feathers, except around eyes, is not my favorited thing to do and I'm not in a hurry for babies. Besides. Looks like another girl is sitting on eggs since yesterday. Going to set her up in EE eggs today.
