The vet took throat swabs of all the chickens and took 2 poop samples. From what I've read I have only seen that if one chicken has MS then they all have it or are carriers. I'm going to ask the vet if we should test each chicken individually. I told the breeder and he thanked me and said I'm glad you are taking good care of them. I bought the 3 hens and 1 rooster from Greg Oakes. The vet said the flock should be closed anyways because of AI and all the other diseases wild birds can give your flock so no need to cull. She seems very familiar with chickens. I was planning on keeping the chickens and the eggs but I would like to figure out what to do to get rid of MS at some point in time...

They were respiratory PCR tests from swabs. Negative for Mycoplasma Gallisepticum and positive for Mycoplasma Synoviae.

Just dont sell any birds on. Have whatever birds you want-just close your flock.. MS is so far spread and most flocks will live quite well with it after their immune system does its thing. Yes they will be carriers. With AI going on MS is the least of any worries.

@WLLady @lolotsung I just think it's pathetic and sad that this guy who is well know in the exhibition world gets away with this. Vian may have to hold me back next time I see him. I was already disgusted with the way he handled a big Tom turkey at a show, zero consideration for the bird.

for sure if he knew the birds had it.....

anyways, back also to the broody thing-you can't make a bird go broody, but there is one thing that will greatly increase the probability: DO NOT WANT CHICKS. the instant you decide you do not want the hassle of anything little running around that mom will go broody, drop on the spot and be down for the count. LOL

Yup @WLLady you got that right. I currently have 7 broody turkeys with one (Kathleen) wanting to help out with the babies and getting thumped for her pains!

I'm going to start another chicken project. This way I can sell /give away chicks / pullets every year. I'm going to try and find someone that wants some chickens with MS and keeps them in a coop away from other birds and doesn't want to breed them. They lay so many eggs which makes me wonder if other chickens I've had were sick in some way and this was the reason they didn't lay as many eggs... This is my first time having a vet that actually knows about chickens to help me. She showed me how to inspect their feet, inside their mouth, and feel their keel. :-)
