Broody Hen 2021

Post by KimChick » Mon May 31, 2021 1:24 pm

Today, our broody hen got off her nest quite a few minutes after I opened the barn door. It has been a week since she started brooding.
She even kicked out a couple of eggs. I wish I could have witnessed that; however, I found them when I went out to the barn.
She spent at least an hour off the nest. First, she trotted over to the dust bathing area and spent some time there doing her thing.
Then, I had to strongly encourage her back into the barn after spent another few minutes preening. I finally got to close the big barn door. Hopefully, she is back on her nest.

I have 2 standards sitting. One I gave eggs too. She has not gotten off the nesting box on her own for the last 10 days. I have to take her off the nest and insist she get food and water. I finally got her to move into a larger box in the floor. I'd turn on the incubator, just in case, if you want to keep those developing chicks.

Didn't need the incubator; she went back onto her eggs and hasn't gotten off.
