Lol, I ended up doing the exact same thing. I wasn't going to have a large hatch but one egg lead to another and another and another. Now my basement is full of chicks. I hear you on that sudden poo smell at two weeks onward.

I found that with the red light bubs the paint peeled right off in 2 weeks. My big brooder lamps are still going strong.
I hear you on the poo smell. Our stairwell seems to funnel it upwards!
