Chick with TWISTED foot OR BROKEN LEG?

Post by Poultryprincess » Sun May 01, 2016 1:45 pm

I Thought I had a silkie chick with a leg spreading out under it
BUT ~ she is actually Holding the Leg UP & shaking!!!!!!

The foot is twisted to one side & the chick is not walking on it.
I thought the leg was broken because of the weird position.
But after watching a few videos, I'm not so sure.

Separating the chick ( back to the sewing room )
Going to try the bandaid method to spread the toes.
Will see if I can fix this little one.

Any tips?
Never had to deal with this before.

Chick with curled toe fix?

Post by WaupoosCowgirl » Sun May 01, 2016 2:09 pm

I have used band aid method for toe on one of my first chicks I hatched this year with success. It also had splayed legs and I cut a drinking straw to fit between its' legs and threaded one of my daughters small hair elastics through the straw and put each foot through the loops, like a pair of horse hobbles, worked like a charm.

To fix the toes cut a thin piece of cardboard, shape of a V , so when the toes are positioned correctly they each have support, use some tape and tape the toes to the cardboard. The chick will be able to walk, not the best but it can walk.
I'm concerned that the chick is also splayed leg, did it hatch this way? Splayed legs are easy to fix, but if it was born that way with the curled toes could be a defect that cannot be fixed. Do you have a picture?
By the way I've never had any luck with the bandaid method for splayed leg, could never get the bandaid to stay on for very long, always use chenille straws.

I've read quite a few times that curled toes can be some sort of vitamin deficiency too. Unfortunately it was on PTO's predecessor board. Not sure if it is a B or D deficiency ...

I have done the same as kenya for curled toes, work really well in correcting them!

Chick with curled foot fix OR BROKEN LEG?

Post by Poultryprincess » Sun May 01, 2016 3:29 pm

Sending pics - I don't think this is splayed leg!
The leg is swollen @ the joint, ( where the foot attaches to the leg )
The chick is Holding it UP & can't put any weight on it.
The foot is twisted in a weird way, maybe is it BROKEN!!!

Poor thing is shaking, which means it's in pain.
Omg - now I'm not sure what the heck to do ~ ANY ADVICE???
I don't want to spread the toes & have the poor thing is Worse shape!

No experience with breaks, but it does look like at at least a sprain.
Here's a link to aspirin dosage for pain relief. I think it's also a stickie.

Chick with TWISTED foot OR BROKEN LEG?

Post by WLLady » Sun May 01, 2016 5:26 pm

She isnt too badly twisted, so i would get her on aspirin for a few days and see if it helps. Keep her food and water and heat close together so she doesnt have to walk to reach food and water and keep her quiet for a bit.

Vitamin b is the usual suspect for deficiencies, but this looks like an injury to me.
Hopefully she will be right as rain in a couple of days. Just make sure she is eating and drinking....if she doesnt eat try some mashed up hard boiled egg for a quick protein fix....

That is not splayed leg, nor curled toes.
Does the joint bend at all? Looks more like a slipped tendon, sorry but I've never had any luck fixing that. Some people have had luck pulling the leg back behind the bird at a 90 degree angle and you will feel the tendon slip back into the grove, problem is it slips right back out most times.
