Re: Another broody
Yes an almost fully developed chick in there. I checked because I was kinda hoping it was the suspected quitter but I don't think so. I'm hoping it's just the crazy weather. It is her first time so I need to cut her some slack but it's so sad to see one so close.

Oh no - that's really sad!
It sounds like the crazy weather we've had lately has wreaked havoc on quite a few PTO members' hatches.
Fingers crossed that the remaining chicks make it through hatching.

I think the weather has something to do with it but I don't use the bigger hens for broodies any more too many broken eggs and squashed chicks

Re: Another broody
Well what an eventful day. Lola has not left her nest once by herself since she started sitting. And no other chickens have so much as glanced at her. Twice a day I would carefully lift her out and she would return herself 10-15 minutes later after a quick snack and dust bath. Today is day 20 so I haven't touched her since yesterday morning. Around 10am I looked out and saw her dust bathing. Oh no. I go out and look at her eggs and there's Little sitting on them all zoned out like she went broody in a second. So I waited there for Lola to return and shuffled Little out. About noon I see Lola booting across the backyard heading for a different dust bath spot. I went to check her eggs and one of the barred rocks was on them and from the freaked out face on her she could obviously feel something she wasn't expecting lol. After these two incidents I wasn't feeling too hopeful. I just went out to check on her and saw egg shell bits in front of her and one piece stuck on her beak. I thought holy hell she ate it
i parted her chest feathers just enough to see a fluffy butt. So she has one live baby. Against all odds lol.

Well another only chick. Lola steam rolled the other egg. It was half zipped and crushed. @kenya I think you are very wise not letting big girls do this. Next time one of them goes broody they get golf balls and I'll throw eggs in the incubator. I just hope she manages to not suffocate this little one. May look for a couple day old chicks today to add in.

Even my little Ameraucana had steamrollered 2 of the shrink wrapped half out chicks, I really think the weather isn't helping. Good Luck with her baby.

Another black chick. The flock got a peak at her this afternoon. So cute to see Mom call the baby out from under her so she can show her off.

And look at the proud mama :)
My mom and chick duo are pretty hilarious, I opened the door for them, the hen headed out at which point the chick screeched and ran to the box where he hatched and stood on the edge yelling, nooo don't leave me.....I don't want to go there ....it's way too scary...
so the hen turned around and went to sit on him in the box.
Yup, spoiled.
