well we ended up with 8 curious healthy poults! 50% survival rate. had 2 hatch n die, and a few pip n not hatch, probably because of my stupidity with assuming the humidity level was ok when it was way to high. another turkey hatch is in order.

I absolutely LUV turkeys!!!!
They are the sweetest birds evah (*o*)

My "PET" Ridley Bronze tom "Baby Cakes" used to follow me around & jump on my feet until I picked him up.
Our rotti went crazy every time he smelled where B.C. had been.
I decided it was not safe for Baby & his woman Betty to be here.
Sad day when he went to a Petting Zoo, but glad the dog couldn't get him.

THANKS!

My broody Red turned into both hens in that pen going broody, in the same nest box, sharing the eggs. hmmmmm... Well I went with it, the nest box is large enough for both and they got along just fine. eggs are pipped under each hen... :-)

see what tommorow brings!

ok so to update on broody red hens... very disappointing... it would seem that once the chicks zipped the weight of the hens crushed them. I was all excited and walked into both hens sitting tight n no chick noises... I lifted them up and saw what happened. So disappointing. so I broke them of being broody by simply taking the nest box away. they slept on the roost that night.

Lovely babies, what is it about turkeys? My hatches not great yet but I find that this early in the year. One of my broody BSW girls hatched 4 and she too crushed 2 eggs with full term poults. I wonder if I disturbed her? One egg a bit behind the others so I threw it in the bator. I think another may have given up what with the weather and all. 9 poults in the basement getting bored too.

I wonder sometimes if nest box design can be a factor in a hen crushing eggs- I have a humongous dark Cornish that's always going broody. So far I've been breaking her of it, but next year I'll probably let her hatch some eggs. I think she weighs close to 10 lbs, maybe she needs a much bigger nest box to hatch successfully or ??
