thegawd wrote:QR_BBPOST Thanks again Collleen! HAHA Ross you know it. We had a chicken stew the other day, you know the kind you eat with a fork? about half way through the bowl I ask Lizzie if this is one of our birds, n she said yup it was one she butchered into pieces. man was it ever so good n tender! mmmmm hmmmmmm it must have been one of the EE Roosters. they were nice n meaty birds, about a year or more. quite possibly some of the most expensive chicken ever but man was it good! I still have about ten more to go. I might work on them this weekend...

Have a good one!
You're right about flavour. Vian Could never eat our own and then I persuaded him to try one. Boy was there ever a change of mind in a hurry! Said it was like the ones from childhood!

It's because your black leghorns aren't really black, they only look black. The outward appearance is one thing, but the bird will breed based on what it's hiding by the visible colours.
For anyone interested here's an excellent classic paper on melanization
http://www.poultryscience.org/docs/pba/ ... 0Smyth.pdf
with some great drawings and details of the E locus and chick down that indicates what the E locus is. The E locus is important to know when you are breeding for a specific colour or pattern and often the only time you can pick that up is from the chick down.

the last green band was splayed really bad! it sucked but I know now what I did wrong.... humidity was WAY to high. crazy how it fluctuates so much within a short period of time.

I didnt have the hydrometer in the hatcher for the last chicken hatch or the beginning of this turkey hatch. stupidity! the first turkey poult hatched with an unabsorbed yolk sac, I didnt clue in right away until my kids sounded the alarm when the second poult pipped. they came screaming that fluid was oozing from the egg! i ran over and finally put the hydrometer in... 78%!!! GRRRR did I ever feel like a dumba$$. I opened up both drawers and had Lizzie hold the bottom one while i swapped out water dishes. The humidity level settled right at 60%.

I now have 6 curious little poults staring out the window peeping LET ME OUT! the first one was culled, 9 more potentials. lots of pips n zips...

That's what I call "Just in time delivery'!!
Al, the best advice I ever got from a Judge, "Take lots of pictures", it's amazing how soon you forget Who was bred to whom and what they produced. Your black looking chicks may be the future "birds to beat" in the show ring!!! :)
