here's that light downed chick Robbie and another random for comparison... "her" down is much lighter than normal but is fairly close to feathering in the right color. can you make any genetic sense out of it? could she possibly end up looking more like a production color rather than a real red? hmmmmm

light downed red
light downed red
light downed red again
light downed red again
random red
random red
same random red
same random red

I was just curious, they say that lighter down colour Buckeye chicks end up as lighter adults, but I don't know if this holds true for other breeds. I don't know if anyone has ever said what genetic combination makes some Buckeye (or RIR) chicks lighter coloured than others.

JMF Jumbo quail are hatching this morning! YEEEEHAAAAAAA!!! 3 are out and 10 more possible. I had lots of clear ones probably due to improper egg storage and well some were around 20 days old. 100% dry hatch. i havent added water at all we shall see how it goes. so far so good.

What do you have the eggs sitting in? Like them. Very cute birds. Good luck with the hatch.

thanks RedNinja! the egg trays are actually ice cube trays from dollarama. they have a flexible silicone bottom that I cut off. i would like some real quail egg trays but these work great!
