sanitizing egg method to improve incubator hatch rate
I found a reference for cleaning/treating eggs prior to setting them for incubation. It's supposed to improve hatch rate. Does anyone have any experience using this method?

This kind of makes sense to me and would be allowable (I think) in organic production facilities. Formaldehyde is very unpleasant stuff to use.

I just put the eggs into the incubator. I don't clean them off or anything. When I incubate my own eggs and they are fertile , my hatch rate is 100% if I get shipped eggs, I put them into the incubator as is. Usually I have about 80% hatch rate.
Happy hatching!

I don't sanitise either but the method for large scale could work.

It's a patented method...does this mean that if we use it, we have to pay a royalty?

Re: sanitizing egg method to improve incubator hatch rate
okay so you get 3 more hatched out of 100 eggs. when compared to formaldehyde a substance that is toxic at low concentrations. um....so whats their hatch rate of normal eggs without any treatment?that would be the appropriate control in this case. maybe they dont need to sanitize at all!!! also their hydrogen peroxide is purchased so would thus contain acid to stabilize it in form higher than 4%. so is it the acid or the peroxide having the effect? ever soak an egg in diute acid like vinegar? it eats the shell...so...easier hatching because of weaker shells? honestly i want my chicks to work to hatch so the strongest survive in my gene pool.....
oh so many holes in the science......

Re: sanitizing egg method to improve incubator hatch rate
Of all the years of hatching, I washed, scrubbed and the odd time even did a tylan dip on all my hatching eggs and had excellent results. Last year, I did the no wash but knock off crap method.....hatch rates were down.......
That being said, there are so many other factors. Perhaps my incubator was not working at top performance, hen health and nutrition not at peek performance, bacteria, cockbird health.............
Bottomline, with so many variables, do what works for you.

Re: sanitizing egg method to improve incubator hatch rate
Tylan dip eggs: Not sure if it was effective or should I state how effective it was. But, way back in the day when sourced hatching eggs from other sources I would just dip the egg in a Tylan solution...and place in incubator. My thinking was.. kill off anything that could be transmitted thru an egg. Again, not a scientist but thinking common knowledge, and might give extra protection of the egg.
Sometimes, the Tylan will soon expire and instead of disposing a next to full bottle....I will mix a few batches and set eggs.
Not much of an egg/hatch ratio counter....I just look for strong healthy chicks and cull weak chicks asap. Next thing I know 200 chicks on the ground and I am still hatching.....
