incubator location

Post by KimChick » Mon Mar 26, 2018 10:24 am

I may have missed this piece of info in my quick reading about incubating, but my question is:
Where should the incubator be placed? Dark room? A room that can be sunny?
Dark or sunny is my main concern. Or is the cold basement the best place?
I'll be collecting eggs this week for incubation right after Easter.
Thanks!

Put it in any room that has a consistent temperature. If sun falls on it the temp control does not work so well. I have a rec room that stays about 18C for most of the year. Also the humidity there doesn't change much until we hit late July/August. Your aim is to have the thermostat in the incubator not have to work too hard.

It doesn't matter if it's in the dark or not, as long as sunlight isn't causing temperature swings as KB said. The more stable, the better. as far as you can get it from windows, doors, heating appliances like space heaters or ranges, and cool drafts. Finished basements are great, stone cellars not so much.

I am assuming you use Hovabator, I was actually keen enough at one point and measured the ambient temperature and the Hova temperature right thru the hatch and found that the Hovabator display was only accurate once the room temperature was about 20 C
It should never be where sun may hit the incubator, it's pretty amazing just how fast it will heat up.
Just like KB and WWW said, dark is fine.
Just a reminder, wrapping the incubator in a blanket may block air intake.

Thanks everyone.
The best location that I can manage right now is at a door.
Reasoning is: a nearby, available electrical outlet; space for a small table on which to put incubator; the window has a shade that will be down; the door is the old, original front door of the farmhouse with no screen door. I'm thinking it may be bright, but upon testing the old, borrowed incubator, it can hold a steady temperature. I will have to test it for proper humidity.

I totally get the difficulties of finding a good spot for the incubator.
Not everybody has an incubator / gym room like KB ;)
I would just get a couple of cheep thermometers and keep them strategically placed to have an idea of what is happening with the room temperature. Just makes it easier to figure out and remedy any problems, in case things go south. ;)
