Making Babies

THANKS PP! Yeah the cups are gravity fed from a bucket on top of the brooder. as the cup empties it raises opening a tiny valve that drips water back into the cup, you can adjust this somewhat, once the cup fills back up it presses on the valve and shuts it off. very simple really and iv been quite suprised with them. my theory with only 6 cups is that as long as it never runs dry there wont be any problems. now if it ran out oh yeah there would be problems when it got filled back up.

Thanks CoonHound! I'll keep an eye on them. I hope they are blacks, before I seperated them they were hanging around with a black single comb cock. but one has red leakage and without grabbing my standard they should have yellow legs and beaks right?

Thanks Norma! Gage gave them a few hugs hahahaha he tried to kiss one but I didnt let him lol.

6 more reds were just id'd and brought out to the brooder! that's 48. still more potentials... one pipped, may be shrink wrapped, not sure but its a green band from my most promising breeding pen! im going to intervene soon if it dosent start zipping. ohhhh it just started zipping! phewwww, I dont like helping as it usually causes more harm than good, at least in my experience.

now 2 of the sharpied hatched without incident, 2 havent even pipped. hmmmm interesting eh!

Beautiful chicks! Love your brooder set up too
Your kids are so lucky growing up seeing and learning all this stuff
And exactly how will you explain to your son that you are giving away some of "his" chicks. Lol

Well Im very happy with the results and heres the conclusion:

11/11 green band rir hatched 100% fertility and hatch rate.

27/44 blue band rir hatched. 100% fertility, 61% hatch rate. I removed 7 early quitters and ten didn't hatch. Oddly enough the ones that didnt hatch were all collected towards the end before incubation, weird. my oldest eggs that made it to lockdown did hatch, one was from 2/29 and another 3/01.

11/14 light brown leghorns hatched. 100% fertility, 79% hatch rate. 5 are light brown and 6 are something else. also in this group I colored 4 eggs with a sharpie, 2 hatched and 2 didnt even pip. Im not sure what I take away from this experiment LOL, try again maybe? haha

The 2 sharpies eggs that didn't hatch, did they have chicks in them?
